Malaysian Fresh Pineapples Enter New Zealand Market, Boosting Export Prospects

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 – Malaysia has achieved another milestone in the agricultural sector with the successful entry of fresh Malaysian pineapples into the New Zealand market, marking a significant step in expanding the country's agricultural exports. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mohamad Sabu, officiated the Malaysian Fresh Pineapple Export Container Send-Off Ceremony to New Zealand at the Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. Mohamad said the achievement reflects growing international confidence in the quality and safety of Malaysian agricultural produce, particularly pineapples, which have gained recognition in global markets. “Malaysia produces more than 530,000 metric tonnes of pineapples annually, including premium varieties such as MD2, Josapine and N36, which possess the quality and standards required to compete internationally,” he said. He expressed appreciation to the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM), the Department of Agriculture, the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (MAQIS), exporters and industry players for their collective efforts in ensuring Malaysian pineapples meet New Zealand's stringent import requirements. “This success is the result of close cooperation among government agencies and industry stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to ensure compliance with international standards,” he added. According to Mohamad, initial demand from New Zealand is estimated at one container per month, generating an annual export value of approximately RM4.32 million. He said the new market access would create additional opportunities for local pineapple growers and exporters while strengthening the country's pineapple industry towards achieving the national export target of RM2 billion by 2027. “This is only the beginning. We hope to penetrate more premium international markets in the future and further enhance Malaysia's reputation as a producer and exporter of high-quality pineapples,” he said. Mohamad added that the government remains committed to supporting the growth of the agricultural sector and expanding export opportunities to benefit farmers, entrepreneurs and the national economy. The latest export development is expected to contribute positively to Malaysia's agricultural trade performance while strengthening the country's position in the global fresh fruit market. -- MINUTESMY

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 -- Deputy Minister of Human Resources, R. Ramanan, reaffirmed the MADANI Government's commitment to strengthening the role of trade unions as strategic partners in safeguarding workers' welfare and promoting inclusive economic growth. Speaking at the Peninsular Malaysia-level 2026 Trade Union Affairs Programme (PHEKS) Grant Presentation Ceremony, attended by more than 1,500 trade union members from across Peninsular Malaysia, Ramanan announced the distribution of RM2.88 million in grants to 315 trade unions nationwide. The programme will support training, education, research, digitalisation, governance empowerment, outreach initiatives, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities,” he said. Ramanan emphasised that trade unions play a much broader role than merely serving as a platform for workers to voice grievances. “Trade unions are the voice of workers, an important mechanism for checks and balances, and a key partner in national development,” he said. Addressing the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the future of work, he stressed the importance of equipping Malaysian workers with new skills to remain competitive in a rapidly changing employment landscape. He noted that KESUMA has introduced various training initiatives, including the AI MyMahir Roadshow, aimed at helping Malaysians acquire future-ready digital and technological skills. “When workers are protected, the economy grows. Trump To Present World Cup Trophy To Winners, Says Infantino

BOSTON, June 24 -- United States (US) president Donald Trump is set to hand over the World Cup trophy to the winners at the final on July 19, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said, reported PA Media/dpa. Infantino and President Trump have forged a close relationship in the build-up to these finals, but Trump has made very few public pronouncements concerning the tournament since it began on June 11. However, Infantino confirmed in an interview with Fox News programme Fox & Friends that the plan is for Trump to play a starring role in the trophy presentation ceremony at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, just as he did at last year's Club World Cup final in the US, which was won by Chelsea. “We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course,” Infantino said. Asked if they would make the presentation together, Infantino added: “Of course, we are together all the time.” At the Club World Cup final, Trump remained on the winners’ podium after handing the trophy to Chelsea’s Reece James. “They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay,” said James afterwards. Asked what Trump had said to him, James added: “To be honest it was quite loud. I couldn’t hear too much. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.” Match-winner Cole Palmer had appeared bemused by the situation. He said afterwards: “I knew he was going to be here, but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit confused, yes.” -- BERNAMA-PA MEDIA/dpa

Pakistan supports Iran’s right to possess ballistic missiles during Pezeshkian’s visit

HYDERABAD,JUNE 24 -- Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday strongly defended Iran's right to possess ballistic missiles, saying Tehran's missile program was never part of the peace deal between the United States (US) and Iran brokered by Islamabad. He argued that Iran should not be subjected to double standards regarding its missile capabilities. Speaking during talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his high-level delegation in Islamabad, Shehbaz said the issue of Iran's ballistic missiles was never part of the discussions that led to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached between Iran and the US on June 17. "There can be no double standard when some countries are allowed to have ballistic missiles while Iran is not." "This MoU does not mention anything about ballistic missiles. "It was never discussed and it was never on the agenda," the Pakistani Prime Minister said, adding that the Iranian side "never wanted to discuss" the missile issue. Shehbaz's action to defend Iran's missile program came at a time when Tehran considers its missile capabilities important to national security following the attacks launched by Israel and the US on Feb 28. Before helping in the mediation efforts that led to the US-Iran deal this month, Pakistan also facilitated a temporary ceasefire between the two sides in April. Shehbaz said he was grateful to Iran for the trust placed in Pakistan's mediation efforts, which also involved the active role of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. "I am deeply grateful to you and the Iranian leadership for placing continued trust in Pakistan's ability to mediate honestly and sincerely," he said. "I want to assure you that as brothers, we will not let you down," Shehbaz told the Iranian president, according to a statement posted on the prime minister's Facebook page. However, Shehbaz said there were certain parties trying to prevent the US and Iran from reaching an agreement. "There are troublemakers all over the world who want to derail this peace agreement," he said. Israel has emerged as the greatest obstacle to peace in West Asia, with its continued attacks causing death and destruction in Lebanon and occupied Palestine. US President Donald Trump recently acknowledged that Iran could possess ballistic missiles. "I said that if other countries have ballistic missiles, it would be a bit unfair if Iran wasn't allowed to have them," Trump told reporters in Paris on June 17. In a press conference with Shehbaz, Pezeshkian stressed that Iran's defense capabilities are non-negotiable. "If the missiles we have to defend the country did not exist, Israel and America would destroy Iran as they did in Gaza without showing mercy to the old or the young," Pezeshkian said. -- BERNAMA
