KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 15 -- The ringgit continued its upward momentum by opening higher on Monday against the US dollar and other major currencies, supported by improved risk sentiment following signs of easing geopolitical tensions. At 8am, the local currency rose to 4.0430/0500 against the US dollar from 4.0555/0600 at the close last Friday. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd Chief Economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said news of the possibility of the Strait of Hormuz being reopened following the agreement between the United States and Iran on a peace deal scheduled to be signed on June 19 had boosted market sentiment. “WTI and Brent crude oil prices have fallen by more than four percent, with Brent crude now trading at US$83.83 per barrel. "In my view, the ringgit is heading towards RM4.00 against the US dollar. It may not be at that level immediately but being below RM4.00 is in line with the fair value of the ringgit based on the current macroeconomic conditions and the resilience of Malaysia's economic growth," he told Bernama. In the opening session, the local currency strengthened against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit rose against the Japanese yen to 2.5275/5320 from 2.5334/5364 at last Friday's close, rose against the pound to 5.4374/4468 from 5.4429/4489 and gained against the euro to 4.6911/6992 from 4.6979/7031 previously. The local currency also strengthened against regional currencies. The ringgit rose against the Singapore dollar to 3.1554/1611 from 3.1602/1640 last Friday and surged against the Thai baht to 12.4015/4298 from 12.4105/4288 previously. The local currency also rose against the Indonesian rupiah to 226.3/226.8 from 227.0/227.4 and increased against the Philippine peso to 6.65/6.66 from 6.67/6.68 previously. -- BERNAMA

NEW YORK: The World Bank lowered its global growth forecast to 2.5 percent for 2026 on Thursday, from 2.9 percent in 2025, marking the lowest rate since late 2019, Xinhua News Agency reported. The bank's semi-annual Global Economic Prospects report cited rising energy prices, higher inflation and rising borrowing costs amid the West Asian conflict as reasons for the reduction in growth projections. The report also warned that downside risks are significant. Global growth could further moderate to 2.1 percent if energy supply disruptions persist and oil prices average US$115 a barrel this year, which would push inflation to 4.4 percent. The report lowered growth forecasts for two-thirds of countries compared to the January report this year, with Gulf countries recording the largest reduction from 3.9 percent in 2025 to almost zero in 2026. South Asia is expected to record the strongest growth of any region at 6.3 percent in 2026, although that figure is down from seven percent in 2025. In addition, the report maintained a growth forecast of 2.2 percent for the United States (US) economy in 2026, although it noted that the figure could decline to 2.1 percent in 2027 and two percent in 2028. The eurozone economy is expected to grow at a rate of 0.8 percent in 2026, down from 1.4 percent in 2025. As for Japan's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it is projected to grow by 0.7 percent in 2026 compared to 1.1 percent in 2025. The World Bank expects global growth to rebound to 2.8 percent in 2027, but that rate remains 0.4 percentage points below the average recorded in the 2010s. While risks remain tilted to the downside due to increased hostilities, commodity market disruptions and heightened geopolitical tensions, the bank stressed that policy action is critical. At the global level, the World Bank urged countries to protect energy and food security and advance the energy transition. At the domestic level, all countries were urged to control inflation, strengthen fiscal sustainability and support job creation. --BERNAMA-XINHUA

LONDON, 15 June  -- AI is rapidly reshaping the skills employers want most from workers – increasing the emphasis on human skills such as judgement, creativity and leadership – as companies most able to use AI continue to expand hiring faster than their peers, according to PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, released today.  The Barometer, which analysed more than one billion job ads across six continents, also finds that AI is driving a 'two-track' global labour market in which 'professionalised' roles – in which AI automates routine tasks so human judgement and expertise are emphasized – are growing faster than roles 'democratised' by AI – in which AI makes the role itself easier for non-experts to perform. 'Professionalised' roles (such as radiologists or recruiters) are seeing twice the growth in available jobs and 42% faster salary growth than those categorised as 'democratised' (such as IT service managers or medical secretaries). At the entry level, AI appears to be increasing demand for more 'senior' skills from junior workers. Based on 2.4 million entry-level jobs analysed in the US, entry-level roles most exposed to AI are now seven times more likely to require traditionally senior-level 'human-intensive' skills like leadership, creativity or face-to-face interactions. Job openings for these 'seniorised' entry-level roles have grown 35% since 2019, while other entry-level roles shrank 10%. Joe Atkinson, Global Chief AI Officer, PwC, said: "Across the global economy, we're beginning to see a new divide emerge between different models for talent and value creation. The companies seeing the greatest returns on AI are using it to amplify human expertise, accelerate innovation and create entirely new sources of value. As a result, they are pulling further ahead on productivity and growth than companies that focus primarily on automation." AI is driving a productivity boom – and "super-star" companies most able to use AI are pulling ahead significantly The report finds widening divergence between companies most and least exposed to AI. Companies operating in the most AI-exposed sectors recorded 34% productivity growth in 2025 relative to 2018, compared to 24% for the companies least able to use AI. Within this group, a pronounced "super-star" effect is emerging. The top 20% of the most AI-exposed companies achieved average labour productivity growth of 163% relative to 2018 – nearly five times higher than the most AI-exposed companies overall. Perhaps most surprisingly, headcount growth at the most AI-exposed companies is outpacing growth at the least AI-exposed companies – 52% relative to 36% in 2025, based on 2018 baseline levels. Average wage premium for AI skills hits 62% as AI job postings eclipse broader labour market growth As companies continue to boost productivity with AI, the average wage premium for workers with AI skills continued to surge higher – hitting 62%, up from 57% last year. The wage premium varies by industry: as high as 118% in some sectors, such as consumer markets, and 16% in government and public sector work. Jobs requiring specific AI skills – such as prompt engineering or machine learning – have also soared, growing roughly eight times (69%) as fast as the overall jobs market, at 9%. The number of AI jobs is almost twice as high as 2024, with growth in AI jobs outpacing all jobs since 2015.  Sectors including technology, media and telecommunications (11%) and professional services (6%) sectors saw the highest share in AI job growth – with health at the lowest end (less than 1%) Pete Brown, Global Workforce Leader, PwC, said: "The traditional relationship between experience and expertise is changing. AI is removing some of the routine work that once acted as an apprenticeship, while increasing demand for judgement, leadership and adaptability much earlier in careers. Organisations need to rethink how they develop talent if they want people to thrive in this new environment." Notes to Editors About PwC 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer  PwC's 2026 AI Jobs Barometer analysed more than one billion jobs advertisements in 27 countries and territories. The Barometer combines large-scale labour market, company financial and occupational task data to understand how AI is reshaping jobs, skills, wages and productivity across the global economy. Additionally, this year's Barometer includes targeted analysis of entry-level roles, including how the skill requirements of early-career jobs are changing in highly AI-exposed occupations. KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has underscored the critical role of Islamic scholars in guiding society through the challenges of rapid technological advancement, particularly in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the opening of the 4th Southeast Asia Scholars Conference 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Zahid said technological progress must be anchored in strong ethical and moral values to ensure it benefits humanity and contributes positively to societal development. The conference gathered approximately 600 Islamic scholars, muftis, academics, researchers and intellectuals from across the ASEAN region to discuss contemporary issues affecting the Muslim community. Zahid noted that while economic and geopolitical challenges continue to dominate global discourse, a growing crisis of values, manners and wisdom within society poses an equally significant concern. "Technological advancements, including AI, data analytics and innovation, must be utilised responsibly and guided by ethical principles. The framework of Maqasid Syariah should continue to serve as a compass in shaping policies and development that prioritise human welfare and societal well-being," he said. The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of intellectual diplomacy among Islamic scholars in Southeast Asia, stressing that stronger regional cooperation can help build consensus on key issues facing the ummah and generate practical solutions to emerging challenges. He called on scholars and religious institutions to continue fostering dialogue, research and collaboration to ensure that technological progress remains aligned with the values of justice, compassion and social responsibility. Zahid also commended the Muslim World League (MWL) and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) for their continued efforts in organising the conference and promoting scholarly engagement across the region. He expressed hope that the discussions and deliberations held during the conference would strengthen the unity of the Muslim community, elevate the role of knowledge in nation-building and deliver lasting benefits to Southeast Asia and beyond. The three-day conference serves as a platform for regional scholars to exchange ideas and address contemporary challenges affecting Muslim societies in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. -- MINUTESMY -- SOURCE: FB ZAHID HAMIDI

JOHOR BAHRU: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) intends to reclaim several State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats it previously won, including Parit Yaani and Kota Iskandar, in the Johor State Election (PRN). Johor Amanah chairman Aminolhuda Hassan said the state seat was among the 19 seats that Amanah would contest, apart from Simpang Jeram, which was the only seat won by the party in the 2022 general election. "Amanah will also field candidates in Permas, Kemelah, Tenang, Serom, Maharani and Bukit Pasir," he told Bernama. Aminolhuda, who won the Parit Yaani state seat on a PAS ticket in 2013 and PH-Amanah in 2018, said that although several areas were known to be Barisan Nasional (BN) strongholds, Amanah was determined to give a tough competition in this election. He said the party also had confidence in the opportunities in suburban areas. Meanwhile, he, who is also the Johor PH chairman, said the coalition had decided to hand over the Endau, Pulai Sebatang and Senggarang state seats to be contested by PKR. Regarding the Puteri Wangsa and Larkin state seats which are linked to negotiations among PH component parties, Aminolhuda said that so far there has been no final decision on the distribution of the two seats. In the 2022 Johor state election, the Puteri Wangsa state seat was won by MUDA through Puteri Amira Aisya Abd Aziz with a majority of 7,114 votes in a six-cornered contest, while the Larkin state seat was won by BN through Mohd Hairi Mad Shah with a majority of 6,178 votes. In this election, DAP will contest in 17 state assembly seats while PKR will contest in 20 state assemblies. The Johor state election is set for July 11 with nominations on June 27. -- BERNAMA

NILAI, June 15 — The Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) has postponed any decision regarding its future political alignment until after the upcoming Perikatan Nasional (PN) Supreme Council meeting, while intensifying preparations for the forthcoming state elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan. The decision was among the key resolutions adopted during MIPP’s Central Committee meeting held at the Nilai Springs Resort Hotel on Sunday, according to party Secretary-General Sathes Kumar Nilameham. In a statement issued after the meeting, MIPP said its leadership had undertaken a comprehensive assessment of the current political landscape, including recent engagements and discussions with several political parties amid evolving political developments. “The Central Committee has resolved that any decision concerning the party’s future political direction will only be made after the Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council convenes its meeting, which is expected to take place in the near future,” the statement said. The committee also granted full authority to MIPP President to continue discussions, consultations and negotiations with relevant political stakeholders in the best interests of both the party and the Indian community. Meanwhile, MIPP announced that preparations for the next round of state elections are already underway, with the party identifying four constituencies in Johor and three in Negeri Sembilan as potential seats to contest. The party said all prospective candidates will be young Indian leaders who possess the capability and vision to represent the aspirations of a new generation of voters. MIPP added that its election machinery in Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka has been fully activated and is currently carrying out grassroots programmes aimed at strengthening engagement with local communities ahead of the polls. Reaffirming its commitment to national development, the party said it will continue advocating for political stability, national unity and economic growth, while championing the interests of the Indian community and Malaysians as a whole. -- MINUTESMY

ISTANBUL, June 15 -- Hamas said on Sunday that it submitted the Palestinian factions' response to a roadmap proposed by the UN's special coordinator for the West Asia peace process, stressing the need for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, Anadolu Ajansi reported. On May 21, Nickolay Mladenov presented the 15-point outline for implementing the plan proposed by US President Donald Trump regarding the Gaza Strip. Mladenov's roadmap outlines mechanisms for implementing issues related to Gaza's future, including reconstruction, disarmament, Israeli withdrawal, the operation of the international stabilisation force, and the rebuilding of the police force. The roadmap emphasised the necessity of "implementing the measures promised at the beginning of the ceasefire, including the crossing of humanitarian aid, fuel, shelters, besides the measures stipulated in the Sharm el-Sheikh understandings, before moving to the next phase." Hamas said "it, along with the Palestinian factions and the mediating countries (Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye), held numerous meetings in Cairo during the past week (starting June 6), which resulted in the formulation of a unified national position, submitted yesterday." It stressed that "the Palestinian factions dealt with the roadmap with a high degree of responsibility and positivity", emphasising "the necessity of full implementation of the first phase, particularly regarding the humanitarian protocol and the cessation of all forms of aggression against our Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip." Hamas also affirmed "the necessity of full adherence to what is written in the roadmap regarding the entry of the administrative committee, the complete Israeli withdrawal from the Strip." It added that "the Hamas delegation in Cairo is scheduled to continue its meetings with mediators and factions to move forward with implementing what is agreed upon." In September 2025, Trump announced a 20-point plan outlining a ceasefire framework that included the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza, the formation of a technocratic administration, and the deployment of an international stabilisation force, along with a call for Hamas to disarm. The first phase of the agreement included a truce and prisoner exchange between Israel and Palestinian factions, a permanent ceasefire, as well as a gradual Israeli withdrawal from the enclave. Israel, however, has continued to violate the agreement on a near-daily basis. Under the second phase, Israel is expected to carry out further withdrawals from the territory, while an international stabilisation force would assume security responsibilities, including facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid and reconstruction materials. Israel's genocide in Gaza since October 2023 has killed nearly 73,000 Palestinians and injured more than 173,000, most of them women and children, according to Palestinian figures. -- BERNAMA-ANADOLU

SEPANG: The operation of Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) which connects Shah Alam, Selangor with surrounding areas is expected to begin at the end of this month, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook. He said the start date of operations would be announced in two weeks and the project was currently in the final phase of trial operations. "After various tests have been carried out and trial operations have been finalised, we are confident that operations (LRT3) can commence," he told reporters after chairing the 62nd Annual General Meeting of the Road Safety Council here today. Meanwhile, Loke said the Bill (RUU) establishing the Malaysian Transport Safety Board (MTSB) will not be tabled in the Parliament session which begins next week. "MTSB has received Cabinet approval, but we are now discussing with the Public Service Department to look at staffing and so on." "This bill will be brought to the next sitting because at this sitting, there is one bill, namely the amendment to the Road Transport Act, which we are giving priority," he said. Loke said the Ministry of Transport (MOT) has also identified individuals to be appointed to the MTSB, which will be finalized in the near future. In another development, Loke said the MOT would hold discussions with e-hailing operators on the possibility of implementing additional safety measures to protect the safety of their drivers. Among the suggestions raised is the installation of dashboard cameras ( dashcams ) in e-hailing vehicles, but this needs to take into account passenger privacy concerns. "In terms of safety measures, we will discuss further with the operator to see what other actions they can take to protect drivers." "In terms of safety, drivers and passengers are equally important. So we have to ensure a balance between the two," he said. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 15 -- About 7,000 to 8,000 Rohingya were sent to third countries each year through intergovernmental cooperation, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail. However, he said the process has now stalled due to various constraints faced by the countries involved. He said the Rohingya ethnic issue was an international issue stemming from the political and security situation in Myanmar, causing Malaysia to accept their presence on humanitarian grounds. "Malaysia has government-to-government (G2G) cooperation with several countries that allows Rohingya refugees to be temporarily housed before being sent to third countries that need their labor or professional services. "Recently, the process of resettling Rohingyas to third countries has faced several constraints, causing their movement to the country to be halted, thus raising various issues that require the attention of all parties," he told reporters after the launch of the Fight Against Scam: Two Teams, One Goal, here, today. Mohd Khalid said that apart from that, Malaysia also took into account the humanitarian aspect in dealing with the issue, in addition to ensuring that national security continues to be maintained. "Everyone who comes to this country must follow the laws and regulations that have been set. These people are subject to our laws. If they commit an offence, we will take action just like we do against anyone else who comes to our country," he said. He said about 215,000 Rohingya are registered with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) while local authorities also have their records in collaboration with the Immigration Department to facilitate monitoring. "We know where they are and what their jobs are. So if any crime occurs involving them, it will be easy for us to take action when we know their location and so on," he said. Commenting on crime trends involving the community, Mohd Khalid said the involvement of the Rohingya ethnic group in crime was low, with 89 individuals recorded as being involved in criminal cases for the period 2024 to this year, which is 0.02 percent of the overall crime statistics in the country. In this regard, he reminded the public not to make statements that could affect public safety and order, while stressing that enforcement action would be taken against any individual who violates the law regardless of nationality. The media last Saturday reported that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the rate of resettlement to third countries by the UNHCR was too low for refugees, including the Rohingya, which was one of the reasons why the group remained in the midst of local communities for a long time. Meanwhile, Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the state recorded 192 cases involving 300 arrests of Rohingya between 2025 and May 2026 involving violent and property crimes. He said the police always take consistent and continuous enforcement action and are not based on current sentiment. "The police always work closely with strategic agency partners, for example the Immigration Department and Local Authorities (PBT), we work together to exchange information and carry out integrated operations," he said at a press conference by the Selangor Commercial Crime Investigation Department, here, today. Shazeli said last year six integrated operations were carried out throughout the state of Selangor to address the issue. Commenting on the issue of demolition of illegal settlements, he said discussions on the matter were being held with the local authorities involved so that further, more constructive action could be taken in line with legal provisions. – BERNAMA

SHAH ALAM, June 15 -- Selangor's financial position is still at a healthy level despite the global economic uncertainties following the supply crisis and fluctuations in world markets. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government did not see the need to take emergency measures because revenue collection remains on a positive track. State revenue collection reached RM1.6 billion as of May against this year’s RM2.8 billion target, with the current collection trend showing positive development. "We have not yet pressed the 'panic button', but are monitoring weekly and monthly developments," he said at a press conference after launching the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package Phase 1 at the Selangor State Secretary's Office (SUK) Building here today.   Amirudin added that Selangor also recorded a RM300 million surplus against total expenditure due to the state government's savings. Although this year's financial position is not as strong as last year's, the state government is confident of achieving the set revenue target, and it still has good reserve collection, he said. "At the same time, various efforts are being made, including through the land disposal process, changes to the actual conditions of land for industrial purposes and the influx of new investments into Selangor," he said. Amirudin said the real impact of global economic uncertainty is expected to be seen in the next few months, and the state government is taking a proactive approach to reduce its impact on the people and the economic sector.   -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on Malaysians to remain vigilant and take early precautionary measures following forecasts that the El Niño phenomenon is expected to influence the country's weather patterns in the coming months and potentially continue into early 2027. In a statement today, Zahid, who also serves as Chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee, said he had taken note of the latest advisory issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) regarding the anticipated impact of El Niño. According to MET Malaysia, the phenomenon is expected to bring hotter and drier weather conditions than usual during the Southwest Monsoon season, resulting in reduced rainfall in several areas across the country. Zahid warned that the prolonged dry spell could increase the risk of water shortages, forest and peatland fires, as well as haze episodes. “I would like to advise all Malaysians to remain prepared and stay informed about current weather developments. The public should use water wisely, avoid open burning activities and prioritise the health and well-being of their families, especially those who are more vulnerable to hot weather conditions,” he said. He also encouraged the public to obtain the latest weather updates through the myCuaca mobile application and official MET Malaysia communication channels. Zahid stressed that early preparedness and responsible action from all parties are crucial in mitigating risks and ensuring public safety during the anticipated weather changes. “Insya-Allah, the Government will continue to closely monitor developments and take the necessary measures to ensure that the safety and welfare of the people remain a top priority,” he added.

ISKANDAR PUTERI, JUNE 15 -- Integrity and trust must continue to be the mainstays in every level of the security forces to ensure that the people's trust in enforcement institutions continues to be maintained, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay. He said that the strength of an organisation does not only depend on physical facilities, buildings or sophisticated assets, but rather, it is determined by the level of integrity and honesty of its members. He said that an organization can have complete experience, skills and assets, but without integrity, all of it is worthless. "If integrity collapses, no matter how great the facilities are, the people's trust will be lost. If we lose property, we lose nothing. If we lose health, we lose something, but if we lose character, we lose everything. "That is the importance of integrity and moral values in life," he said when speaking at the opening ceremony of the Iskandar Puteri District Police Headquarters (IPD) here today. Also present was Johor Police Chief, Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad. Ayob Khan said that the trust carried by each team member must always be safeguarded and cannot be compromised. He said there was no tolerance for abuse of power, corruption or any form of disciplinary violation that could affect the team's image and the public's trust. "Never use rank as protection from legal action. Anyone who betrays the people's trust must face appropriate action regardless of position or rank," he said. In the same development, he said that today's security challenges are increasingly complex as authorities are no longer only facing conventional crime, but rather new threats such as cybercrime, online fraud syndicates, cross-border smuggling and transnational crime. In this regard, he said, the police force needs to continue to strengthen its operational and investigative capabilities through a more proactive, rapid and data-based approach to ensure public safety continues to be maintained. -- BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU: The new amendment to the MARA Act 1966 will be tabled in Parliament this year after the Cabinet approved the policy paper relating to the amendment. MARA chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said he had been asked by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to ensure that the amendment process could be completed according to schedule to enable it to be tabled this year. "This stage is the policy stage and we will give the draft to all stakeholders, especially other ministries, to be evaluated and also refined to obtain feedback from them, before we bring it again to the Cabinet Meeting for the purpose of obtaining approval to be tabled in Parliament," he said. He said this to reporters after the Haul Asmaulhusna 2026 Commemorative Dhikr Ceremony at the Sultan Iskandar Mosque, Bandar Dato Onn, here today. Also present were Ahmad Zahid and Johor BN Chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. He said this when asked about the latest developments regarding the amendment to the MARA Act 1966. So far, the approval given by the Cabinet is at the policy level, while the draft amendments will be distributed to ministries and stakeholders to be refined and receive feedback before being brought back to the Cabinet meeting for final approval. This step is important to ensure that the new MARA Act is more relevant and able to strengthen the role of the agency in the Bumiputera development agenda. Previously, Asyraf Wajdi was reported to have said that the Policy Paper for the formulation of the new Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Act 2026 had been approved by the Cabinet. The new act will replace the MARA Act 1966, with approximately 80 percent of the changes in the draft proposal focused on aspects of governance and compliance based on international standards and good corporate governance practices. -- BERNAMA

KOTA BHARU, June 14 -- Driven by the allure of an ‘overseas holiday,’ thousands of Malaysians have been ignoring safety warnings and queuing for hours to enter southern Thailand, especially during festive seasons and school holidays. Revealing this concerning trend, Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said that daily observations at the state’s three official entry points (ICQS Complexes) - Rantau Panjang in Pasir Mas, Pengkalan Kubor in Tumpat, and Bukit Bunga in Tanah Merah - have recorded extremely high cross-border traffic. He said that on normal days, an estimated 3,000 people cross the border, while the figure rises to more than 4,000 during weekends. According to him, when school holidays arrive, the number increases significantly, reaching between 6,000 and 7,000 people per day. “Overall, the total number of entries and exits involving border passes or passports can reach as high as 10,000 people in a single day. We continuously advise the public that the situation there (in southern Thailand) is difficult to predict. “No one knows when or where a bombing or shooting incident might occur. The travel advisory issued by the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) last year remains in effect, yet many people appear unconcerned and are still willing to queue for hours,” he told Bernama recently. Commenting on the factors drawing visitors to the troubled region, he said that, in his personal view, Kelantan still lacks sufficiently attractive tourist destinations or family recreation spots to encourage locals to spend their holidays within the state. He added that the public’s fascination with the notion of an overseas holiday also plays a significant role. “Many people seem to regard any trip that earns them a passport stamp as an overseas holiday, even though the destination is just across the border and separated only by a river. “Financial considerations are another factor behind the growing trend. The favourable exchange rate of the neighbouring country's currency makes people feel they can spend more freely there,” he said. He added that many locals are willing to cross the border for relatively simple reasons, such as seeking out authentic Thai cuisine, strolling through night markets, or even buying viral snacks from Thailand's 7-Eleven stores before returning home the same day. Meanwhile, Mohd Yusoff suggested that the state government and relevant stakeholders consider transforming border towns such as Rantau Panjang by adopting the development model used in Padang Besar, Perlis, as part of a two-pronged strategy to reduce the outflow of Malaysian currency. He said developing a well-organised commercial complex incorporating a rest and service (R&R) concept could attract domestic tourists without requiring them to cross the border. Citing Perlis as an example, Mohd Yusoff said the R&R shopping complex there, with its attractive retail outlets, has successfully drawn Thai traders to market utility goods, clothing and authentic food products legally on the Malaysian side of the border. “If Kelantan can replicate this model, we can not only attract foreign tourists to visit the state, but also discourage our people from crossing the border simply to visit night markets or go shopping. After all, our culinary culture is not that different from theirs,” he said. Mohd Yusoff also dismissed claims by certain parties that the police’s stricter border controls were to blame for the decline in business activity at the Rantau Panjang and Pengkalan Kubor Duty-Free Zones. He stressed that the economic downturn in both border towns had begun well before the COVID-19 pandemic. “The post-pandemic period has seen a drastic shift in consumer behaviour, with many people now preferring to purchase Thai products online,” he said. Given that the rise of e-commerce has undermined traditional brick-and-mortar businesses, he said border towns could no longer rely on conventional retail models and instead needed to reinvent themselves. This could include developing hubs for viral products, food and popular snacks, including those commonly associated with Thailand's 7-Eleven stores. “Rantau Panjang should be viewed as a destination in its own right and given a new lease of life. Establish attractive retail outlets and bring in the products that people seek from Thailand. That is the best solution for revitalising the local economy,” he said. -- BERNAMA

KUANTAN, June 14 -- The Department of Environment (DOE) has conducted water quality tests at locations near the site of a hydrochloric acid spill following an accident involving a tanker lorry near Cherating bridge yesterday. The department said water samples were tested at three locations within the mangrove area before the water flows into Sungai Cherating, located about 100 metres from the accident site, and found that the pH reading was within the normal range at pH 6. “Monitoring conducted using YSI equipment in Sungai Cherating recorded a river water pH reading of 9.4, indicating that there was no acid contamination,” it said. The DOE said the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) had also successfully sealed the venting line at the rear section of the tank, preventing a larger spill. “The spill is estimated at approximately 1,000 litres and has been neutralised using soda ash. No further leakage or spillage was detected,” the DOE said in a statement. The department stressed that any discharge of pollutants resulting in environmental contamination and found to be in violation of the provisions of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Act 127) will be thoroughly investigated. Should any non-compliance with the Act be identified, strict enforcement action will be taken against those responsible. It also said that it will continue to conduct regular monitoring at the accident site and surrounding areas to ensure that no pollution occurs and that all containment and clean-up measures are fully implemented in accordance with the prescribed requirements. Yesterday, a man was reported injured after the tanker lorry carrying hydrochloric acid that he was driving overturned in Cherating, causing the chemical to spill and flow into a nearby mangrove area. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: The Safe Community Alliance has expressed concern over the increasing use of electronic cigarettes or vaping among school students and teenagers, which is now a public health threat and requires immediate and concerted action. Its chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, said that a tool that was originally intended to help adults quit smoking has now turned into a dangerous trend among young people, exposing them to nicotine addiction at a very young age and serious health risks. He said attractive packaging, a variety of popular flavours, aggressive online marketing and easy access have contributed significantly to the increase in the popularity of the cigarette among students. "What is more worrying is the emergence of illegal vape products that contain harmful substances, which can have serious effects on physical and mental health," he said in a statement today. Lee said the issue should not be considered solely as a disciplinary problem, but rather as a broader public health issue that requires an approach involving all levels of society, including parents, schools, health authorities, enforcement agencies, community leaders and the media to address the problem more effectively. To address the increasingly worrying threat, Lee suggested several key interventions including strengthening enforcement against the sale of the product to minors, as well as conducting regular inspections in areas around schools and educational institutions. He also urged authorities to tighten controls on online sales and advertisements targeting young people, as well as intensify education and awareness programs on the dangers of electronic cigarettes. In addition, parents need to be more sensitive to the activities and influence of their children's peers, as well as providing counselling and support services to students who have experienced nicotine addiction. He said that educational institutions and school environments must be free of the product in question and those found smoking it must be given guidance through counselling and rehabilitation programmes, not just punished. "The future of the country depends on the health and well-being of the younger generation. We need to act decisively to prevent the vaping problem from developing into a more serious public health crisis among Malaysian youth," said Lee. -- BERNAMA

KUANTAN: A man was injured after the lorry he was driving loaded with hydrochloric acid overturned in Cherating, here this morning. Pahang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations and Rescue Division Assistant Director Mohd Salahuddin Isa said his department received an emergency call regarding the incident at 7.32 am this morning. "The accident caused the lorry to leak in the tank and the acid liquid flowed into the mangrove swamp." "The fire department has taken action to create a water curtain to prevent the spread of acid vapors to the main road, with the amount of hydrochloric acid spilled estimated to be less than 1,000 litres," he said in a statement today. He said the Department of Environment (DOE) and related companies had been contacted to coordinate further actions, including the process of transferring chemicals to replacement lorries. "The operation was still ongoing as of 1.40pm today with close monitoring by the Hazardous Chemicals Special Team (HAZMAT) to ensure that the situation remains safe throughout the load transfer process," he said. Mohd Salahuddin said the lorry driver, in his 30s, was sent to Kemaman Hospital before the fire brigade arrived. -- BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU: The rate of resettlement to third countries by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) is too low for refugees, including the Rohingya, which is one of the reasons why the group remains in the midst of local communities for a long time. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that although the UNHCR has two essential tasks, namely registering refugees and finding third countries for resettlement, statistics show that the number of refugee cards issued by the body is far greater than the number of individuals successfully deported. He said that as a result of this imbalance, Malaysia is now forced to face these issues, including the Rohingya ethnic group who are forced to live with the local community while awaiting their uncertain turn for resettlement. "The UNHCR's main task is to register, then find a third country. However, the success rate of placement in a third country is much smaller compared to the issuance of UNHCR cards by the agency itself. As a result, while waiting to be placed, these refugees are in the middle of society," he said. He said this to comment on the issue of the "Catch Rohingya Campaign" on social media, after attending the Drug-Free Aspiration Tour programme organised by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) here. Touching on the increasing temperature of the campaign and the insistence of netizens on social media who want strict action to be taken against the group, he said the community has the right to speak out because this issue directly affects the country's economic, security and social aspects. However, he said refugees have a different status from illegal immigrants (PATI) who can be directly taken action under the Immigration Act, given that the presence of these refugees is driven by conflict-pushing factors in their countries of origin. Saifuddin Nasution said that to address the security implications of the situation, the government is now implementing its own data collection process and is no longer completely dependent on UNHCR data. "When we have our own data, we can take enforcement action if there is any violation of national laws by this group. They are still subject to domestic laws and strict action will be taken if they violate national rules," he said. He said this issue was a legacy issue that had been going on for a long time and rejected the narrative of certain parties who were trying to place the blame for the refugee dumping entirely on the current government. Saifuddin Nasution said the government was ready to manage this issue based on security considerations and humanitarian principles, while welcoming reasonable and constructive suggestions from academics and social activists to help resolve the crisis. -- BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA, June 13 -- Police are tracking down three suspects believed to be involved in a break-in at a luxury handbag outlet in a shopping complex in Cyberjaya, resulting in the loss of 25 handbags worth RM90,000. Sepang District Police chief ACP Norhizam Bahaman said police received a report on the incident at about 12.30 pm yesterday from a woman who owns the premises. “Checks on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage revealed that three masked suspects dressed in black entered the premises before ransacking the outlet and taking handbags displayed on the store’s shelves,” he said in a statement today. Norhizam said the case was being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine, while the jail term may be extended to 14 years if the offence was committed with the intention of theft. He said the incident had also gone viral on social media and attracted public attention, adding that police were actively tracking down the suspects and seeking to recover the stolen items. KOTA BHARU June 13 -- Kelantan police have revised patrol schedules along the Malaysia-Thailand border after uncovering attempts by syndicates to study enforcement patterns and duty rosters to facilitate illegal border crossings. State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the syndicates were found to be monitoring deployment schedules to identify opportunities to trespass and create passages through barbed-wire fences at illegal crossing points that had previously been dismantled by authorities. Following the discovery, police held discussions with the General Operations Force (GOF) about two months ago to review existing patrol strategies, including adopting static control measures in certain areas. "So far, the damage caused by sabotage of the barbed-wire fences has not spread and remains confined to four previously identified locations, all of which have been fully repaired,” he told Bernama recently. Mohd Yusoff also stressed that the integrity of officers and personnel stationed at border control posts remains at a high level, with no cases of information leakage detected. However, he said police continue to closely monitor the matter to ensure any form of misconduct remains under constant scrutiny. “As part of a layered monitoring approach, the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters has established a task force that reports directly to the state police chief to monitor any misconduct related to enforcement duties. “This special team was formed to provide checks and balances so that management does not rely entirely on units operating on the ground,” he said. According to him, the task force is headed by an officer with the rank of ACP and operates based on direct instructions from the state police chief. On border deployment, Mohd Yusoff said the assignment of GOF personnel is fully managed by the Southeast Brigade commander based in Kuantan, Pahang. He said staff rotations are carried out monthly and involve three battalions - Battalion 7 in Terengganu, Battalion 8 in Pengkalan Chepa and Battalion 9 in Kuantan. He added that even when Battalion 8 is not on active border duty or is on leave, its intelligence units continue to assist other battalions conducting operations along the border. Meanwhile, Kelantan police continue to maintain close cooperation with Thai enforcement authorities through regular bilateral meetings. Mohd Yusoff said the collaboration has yielded positive results, particularly in the sharing and exchange of information involving wanted suspects who flee across the border. He cited the recent recovery of a vehicle belonging to the Social Welfare Department (JKM) in Tanah Merah that had been stolen and taken into Thailand. Efforts are ongoing to identify another vehicle that was also reported stolen. In April, a Tanah Merah JKM vehicle stolen by a group of men was found in Sungai Golok. The vehicle was identified through its registration number, and the four-wheel-drive vehicle is believed to have entered Thailand through the Sungai Golok Customs Checkpoint. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday has underscored the critical role of religious leaders in fostering peace, justice and compassion amid growing global conflicts and divisions. Speaking at the Third International Religious Leaders' Summit, which gathered religious leaders, scholars, academics and policymakers from 31 countries, Anwar said the voice of faith-based leaders is increasingly important in navigating an uncertain and fragmented world. The Prime Minister also conveyed his appreciation to the Sultan of Perak, His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who officiated the summit and delivered the keynote address. Anwar stressed that efforts to achieve peace should not be left solely to political considerations, but must also be guided by universal values of humanity, justice and compassion. “In a world environment that is increasingly filled with conflict, division and uncertainty, the role of religious leaders as voices of conscience, moderation and wisdom has become more crucial than ever,” he said. He highlighted ongoing humanitarian crises, including the tragedy in Gaza and conflicts in other parts of the world, calling for greater moral leadership in addressing global challenges. The Prime Minister reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to mutual respect, religious freedom and harmonious coexistence, principles enshrined in the Federal Constitution. “As a plural society, Malaysia believes that true strength lies not in uniformity, but in the ability to manage differences fairly, wisely and respectfully,” he said. Anwar also cautioned against the misuse of religion as a tool to incite hatred and division, emphasising that faith should instead serve as a force for peace, unity and the protection of human dignity regardless of race, religion or background. He expressed hope that international dialogues and forums such as the summit would continue to strengthen understanding among communities and inspire collective efforts towards building a more peaceful, just and humane world. -- MINUTESMY -- SOURCE: FB ANWAR IBRAHIM

He said it was a form of 'investment' to ensure Melaka continued to progress over the next 10 to 20 years, and the allocation was channelled to implement various educational initiatives that would benefit more than 140,000 children in Melaka. "The state government is implementing free tuition and providing school preparation assistance to the B40 group. The state government is allocating another RM15 million through the Melaka Sayang Rakyat (MeSRa) Education Program, the Melaka State Education Trust Fund (TAPEM), "We are also organising sports competitions which also involve large allocations, specifically for the children of the Masjid Tanah Parliament," he said when speaking at the Student Excellence Motivation Programme and the Presentation of School Aid Donations by the MARA Education Foundation at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sultan Alauddin, Masjid Tanah, here today. KOTA BHARU: Police have detected a smuggling syndicate that is now increasingly using river and coastal routes from Tak Bai, Thailand, including waterways in the Tumpat area that can reach the Kelantan River. Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the change in the modus operandi was detected especially this year when syndicates used sea and coastal routes more. He said the syndicate used routes through rivers in Tumpat and island areas including around Pulau Tok Kong. "This year we have seen a significant change in modus operandi. Now syndicate groups are using sea and coastal routes more." "They enter through the rivers in Tumpat and the islands around the area. Many river routes in the area can reach the Kelantan River," he said recently. He said the syndicate also used the coastal route from Tak Bai before entering the Kuala Besar, Semerak, Pengkalan Chepa and Pantai Sabak areas, with some even moving as far as Besut, Terengganu. Mohd Yusoff said the use of the route was proven through several drug arrests carried out by the police in the coastal area previously. "We have made drug arrests in Pantai Sabak and Semerak with the seizure of more than 100 kilograms of syabu brought in by boat," he said. Commenting on the illegal bases on the Malaysia-Thailand border, he said 91 illegal bases built on government land had been demolished so far. He said there were still about four or five more illegal bases on private land and the matter was still being dealt with by local authorities. Mohd Yusoff said that so far all illegal bases that have been identified on government land have been demolished. He said the existence of the illegal base on the Thai side was an issue that fell under that country's jurisdiction. Mohd Yusof said the structures in the neighbouring country, including facilities such as stairs and walls, had existed for a long time, but the actions of the Malaysian authorities were focused on the illegal bases within the country. Security control along the Kelantan-Thailand border covers a distance of approximately 163 kilometres (km), with 91km of it covering the waters of Sungai Golok. The monitoring spans several major districts including Tumpat, Rantau Panjang (Pasir Mas), Tanah Merah, and Jeli. Previously, the ban on illegal border crossings via illegal bases or jetties along the Malaysia-Thailand border (especially in the Sungai Golok area) had been in effect since Dec 1, 2024. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: National music icon Datuk M. Nasir and his company Luncai Emas Sdn Bhd have filed a lawsuit against MyTeksi Sdn Bhd over allegations that he used his name and brand without permission for commercial promotion purposes on the company's platform. The suit was filed by M. Nasir, or his real name, Mohd Nasir Mohamed, 69, together with Luncai Emas through Messrs. Zulpadli & Edham at the High Court here on April 27, naming MyTeksi as the defendant. Case management is set for June 29 via e-Review before Deputy Registrar S. Malarselvi. Based on the writ of summons and statement of claim obtained by the media today, the plaintiff claims that the defendant used the name and brand "M. Nasir" in the promotion of a coffee drink marketed as "M. Nasir's Favorite" through the defendant's official Instagram account without permission. According to the plaintiff, on April 23, 2025, the defendant uploaded advertisements via the Instagram accounts @grabmy and @grabfoodmy featuring cups and cans of coffee labeled "GrabFood" and "GrabMart" to promote products or services offered through the company's platform. "In addition to the advertisement, the caption used was "M Nasir's favorite coffees" followed by the phrase "Dua-dua pun Grab ada" which directly refers to M. Nasir and gives the impression that the product or service is related to him," according to the statement of claim. The plaintiff claimed that the unauthorized use of the name and brand "M. Nasir" caused misunderstanding and confusion among the public, thus damaging the singer's good name and reputation. The plaintiff also claimed that the advertisement did not include any disclaimer or explanation that the reference to "M. Nasir" was not a reference to the artist in question or that he had no involvement with the defendant or the products and services being promoted. According to the plaintiff, the use of his name in a commercial context was clearly intended to benefit from his reputation and commercial value to promote the defendant's products and services without the plaintiff's need or knowledge. Accordingly, the plaintiff is claiming general damages, exemplary damages of RM3 million, aggravated damages of RM2 million, interest and costs. The plaintiff also applied for an injunction to prevent the defendant, its agents and employees from continuing to use the name and brand "M. Nasir" for commercial purposes, in addition to requesting an order for the defendant to submit a statement of profits earned from the sale of drinks advertised using the name "M. Nasir's Favorite". -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: A Rohingya labourer pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of robbing the home of national badminton legend Datuk Razif Sidek while armed with a knife last month. Mohamad Fawyas Yasin, 27, is charged with robbing property belonging to Datuk Mohamad Razif Mohd Sidek, 64, armed with a knife, at a house on Jalan Damansara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail at 12.20pm, May 19. The charge was brought under Section 392 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 397 of the same code, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 14 years and may be fined or whipped, if convicted. Deputy Public Prosecutor J. Banusha did not offer bail as the offence was serious and the accused's United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) card had expired. "If bail is granted and the accused does not appear in court, it will be difficult to track his whereabouts since he does not have a fixed address. In addition, the accused also knows the addresses of the victim and witnesses, so it is feared that the witnesses will be harassed," he said. Meanwhile, Lawyer Mansheel Kaur, representing Mohamad Fawyas, requested a low bail because her client only works as a labourer and earns RM50 a day and has to support his unemployed wife and a 10-month-old child. "The accused has lived in this country for 15 years and in relation to the UNHCR card, the card is in the process of being renewed," said the lawyer. Judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin did not grant bail to the accused as there was no valid UNHCR card for the court to consider and set July 14 for the case to be mentioned again. -- BERNAMA

MELAKA, June 12  -- The police dismantled a 'call centre' syndicate suspected of being involved in a non-existent online investment scam with the arrest of 12 individuals in two raids at Taman Krubong Perdana here early on Wednesday morning. Acting Melaka Tengah district police chief Supt Halim Abas said that those detained comprised 10 male Chinese nationals, in addition to a local man and woman, all aged between 23 and 47 years. "In the first raid at 2.30 am, a team from the Melaka Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) arrested six individuals, consisting of five male Chinese nationals and one local man, all aged between 23 and 43 years. "Meanwhile, the second raid at 3 am led to the arrest of five more male Chinese nationals and a local woman, all aged between 27 and 47 years," he said at a press conference at the Melaka contingent police headquarters (IPK) here today. Commenting further, Halim said that the results of the social media analysis experts' review found that both syndicates engaged in online investment fraud activities that do not exist and are suspected of targeting Chinese citizens through digital platforms. It was said that the investigation found that both syndicates had started operating since early June and were using the MiChat application to communicate with the victims. The investigation results also found that all the suspects acted as customer service representatives who contacted target customers and provided explanations about online investments that could be accessed through the given link. "Interested victims would choose the offered investment and make payments managed by other syndicate members who are still at large," he said. Halim said that in the raid, the police also seized 12 sets of monitors, mouses and keyboards, 12 CPU units, 12 mobile phones, as well as two sets of modems and routers worth approximately RM40,000, which were believed to be used for conducting the activities. He said the investigation was conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code read together with Section 120B of the Penal Code and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, and all suspects have been remanded from June 10 to June 23. He also advised the public to be more cautious before making any money transfer transactions and to check with the bank or police if they feel suspicious about any financial dealings. "The public is also advised to check phone numbers and account numbers through the Semak Mule website before making any transactions, and to immediately contact the bank or the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 if they fall victim to cyber fraud," he added. -- BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA, June 12 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting today reviewed a presentation by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) on the El Niño phenomenon and its potential impact on the country. Anwar said the meeting agreed that METMalaysia should immediately intensify public awareness and outreach efforts by conducting comprehensive briefings across all states. He stressed that preparedness at the grassroots level must also be strengthened, as preventive measures and early planning remain the most effective defense against increasingly volatile and extreme weather conditions. The Prime Minister noted that proactive engagement with state governments, local authorities, and communities is essential to ensure Malaysians are well-prepared to face the challenges posed by climate-related events. During the meeting, MTEN also received a presentation from the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) on the future direction of Malaysia’s Oil and Gas Services and Equipment (OGSE) sector. KOTA KINABALU, June 12 -- The "Moments of Unity" concept forms the cornerstone of the National Unity Week (SMP) 2026 celebration at Likas Stadium here, creating opportunities for Malaysians from diverse backgrounds to connect through shared experiences that strengthen national cohesion. The four-day programme, organised by the National Unity Ministry and running from yesterday until Sunday, is among the flagship initiatives under the Unity Expedition programme themed "Together Building a Nation," with the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate it on Saturday. Sabah National Unity and Integration Department director Rina Ab Harun said the celebration carries significant meaning in efforts to foster harmony and reinforce the Malaysian identity within the country's multicultural society. Speaking to Bernama, she said SMP is more than a symbolic event, serving as an effective platform to promote social integration at the grassroots level and enable people to better appreciate the values underpinning national unity. "This is reflected through a wide range of programmes held throughout the celebration, including arts festivals, sporting activities, forums, cultural programmes and community initiatives that encourage meaningful interaction across communities and generations,” she said. Rina said such engagements were essential in narrowing social divides, cultivating empathy and strengthening the spirit of goodwill among Malaysians. Building on its nationwide outreach efforts, SMP 2026 was held from April to May across five zones, namely the Eastern, Northern, Southern, Central and Sarawak, before culminating in the national-level celebration in Sabah. She said Sabah is the fourth host of the national-level celebration after Sarawak in 2023, followed by Johor in 2024 and Penang last year. According to her, a wide range of activities covering sports, culture, arts and exhibitions, including ethnic house exhibitions and ethnic village displays, were held throughout the four-day programme. “SMP 2026 also features the Progressive Neighbourhood Watch Economic Carnival, handicraft sales, FoodUnites sales, Rahmah Sales and Agro MADANI Sales, as well as various stage performances and competitions, including creative ethnic dance contests,” she said. Rina urged all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, region or background, to regard unity as a shared responsibility and a heritage that must be preserved with sincerity and awareness. She said unity is not merely a slogan but a way of life that begins with mutual understanding, respect, acceptance and appreciation of one another. "In an increasingly challenging world, Malaysia's true strength lies in our ability to remain united despite our diversity, whether in times of joy or adversity. "I hope this Unity Week celebration will serve as a catalyst for a new wave of awareness, particularly among the younger generation, that love for fellow citizens, tolerance and consensus are the most valuable assets in ensuring a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive future for the nation," she said. She also invited the public, especially those in Sabah, to attend and enliven the celebration, which offers an opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity and the spirit of togetherness while participating in a variety of family-friendly activities with free admission. -- BERNAMA

GEORGE TOWN, Jun 13 -- A total of 689 individuals have voluntarily come forward to receive treatment and rehabilitation related to drug abuse through the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) programme until May 31, reflecting the increasing public awareness of the rehabilitation opportunities provided by the government. AADK Enforcement and Security Division Director Mahadzir Elias said the approach provides an opportunity for addicts to voluntarily come forward to receive treatment without having to go through the legal process, as well as reducing the stigma society places on the group.      "The number involves individuals who are seeking treatment and rehabilitation at the Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (PUSPEN) and those who come forward to seek treatment will not face legal action," he said at a press conference after the Penang AADK Special Prevention Operation here, last night. Since the amendment to the Drug Addicts (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 came into effect on August 22, 2025, he said the AADK has opened up wider space for individuals involved in drug abuse to come forward to receive help voluntarily. He said for voluntary treatment and rehabilitation, AADK officers will assess the level of drug involvement and offer treatment packages ranging from three months to two years depending on their level of seriousness. Mahadzir said AADK had arrested 14,518 addicts and those involved in drug abuse nationwide as of May 31, which is 30.43 percent of the target of 47,000 individuals set for this year. Regarding the current trend in drug abuse, he said the pattern is now changing as users no longer gather in specific locations as before, but instead use the illicit substance at home, at work or in locations that are considered safer. Acknowledging that AADK is currently facing the challenge of dealing with the emergence of new drug substances, including those used through vaping, he stressed that most of the substances involved can still be detected through screening tests conducted by the agency. Meanwhile, Mahadzir said that in the AADK Special Prevention Operation in Penang which was carried out for three days until yesterday, a married couple who tested positive for morphine and methamphetamine while with their two three-year-old children and an eight-month-old baby were among 164 individuals arrested. "Of the 164 individuals arrested, 149 tested positive for drugs, while nine others were found to be violating the conditions of Community Rehabilitation Treatment (RPDK) with men recording the highest number of arrests, namely 155 people or 94.5 percent compared to nine women, all aged 19 to 65 years old. "Based on an analysis of the type of drug, methamphetamine is the most abused substance with 100 cases or 61 percent of all arrests, followed by opiates with 35 cases and marijuana (18 cases). He said his party used drone technology complete with a heat detection system or thermal technology  in the operation to monitor drug activity hotspots including in plantations, forests and villages, even at night. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will prosecute cases of extreme motorcycle modification in court under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 following the increasing trend. Senior Director of RTD Enforcement, Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said that so far three investigation papers have been opened under the provision and have received permission to prosecute from the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action. He said the move was a new approach by JPJ which previously focused more on enforcement actions such as summonses and confiscation. "We have detected motorcyclists riding dangerously and recklessly... the most distressing and most dangerous thing is that these motorcyclists continue to remove or discard the rear brake. So imagine the motorcycle moving without brakes." "Any motorcycle that has extreme modifications, we will confiscate and we will charge the motorcyclist involved," he said at the Ops Motosikal (Extreme) press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Road Transport Authority, here, on Wednesday. Muhammad Kifli said more than 300 extremely modified motorcycles have been seized since the beginning of this year, with Kuala Lumpur recording the highest number of seizures. He said that among the modifications that are often detected include the use of squid tires, unauthorized engine changes, the installation of long swing arms (structural components), modifications or deletion of the electronic control unit (ECU) system and the removal of the rear brake. "JPJ views seriously the trend of extreme motorcycle modifications that do not follow set specifications as they can affect the vehicle's original safety features and increase the risk of road accidents." "Most of the people involved are youths aged between 18 and 30, but there are also cases involving school students as young as 12 years old," he said. In an effort to strengthen operations, he said, the special Team Falcon team carries out enforcement every week to detect motorcycles that have been modified in an extreme manner as well as riders who commit offences under Section 42 of the APJ 1987. Based on the JPJ database, he said, a total of 848,885 JPJ(P)22 notices were issued to motorcyclists for various offences in 2024, followed by 711,722 notices in 2025 and 252,118 notices as of May this year. Muhammad Kifli said that from 2021 to this year, a total of 38,959 motorcycles were seized under Section 64(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1987 for violating the provisions of the law. Commenting on the action against motorcycle owners, he said that summonses will be issued not only to the rider but also to the registered owner, including parents, if the vehicle is registered in their name. Regarding possible action against workshops that illegally modify motorcycles, he said, JPJ is examining the legal aspects and will conduct further studies before making any announcement. He said JPJ will also collaborate with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and local authorities to ensure that the components used comply with the regulations. -- BERNAMA

BANGKOK, Jun 15 -- Tourism Malaysia welcomes the announcement by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) on the introduction of a new direct flight route between Bangkok and Kuching which is expected to be a catalyst for the growth of the Malaysian and Thai tourism sectors. Tourism Malaysia director in Bangkok Nurul Ain Mohammed Yunus said the route would not only strengthen regional connectivity, but was also expected to stimulate the growth of the tourism industry in Sarawak and Sabah.   He said if the service begins operating as scheduled this October, it has the potential to increase tourist arrivals and boost tourism-related economic activities in both countries. "Tourism Malaysia welcomes AirBorneo's initiative to operate this new route as Kuching is one of the destinations that is being actively promoted to the Thai market." "Although Kuching is still less well-known among Thai tourists compared to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru, continuous promotional efforts have succeeded in creating new demand and strengthening existing interest in this destination, especially due to its unique cultural heritage and nature-based attractions," he told Bernama when contacted today. The Bangkok-Kuching service is also expected to expand access for Thai tourists to Sarawak in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (TMM2026), thus opening up wider opportunities to explore Borneo's diverse cultures, ecotourism products and UNESCO-recognized heritage sites. Last week, CAAT announced the results of discussions regarding flight schedule revisions, increased service capacity and the opening of new routes to Thailand during the 158th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Slots Conference (SC158) in Bangkok. According to CAAT, AirBorneo is among four new airlines that have received airport slot allocations to operate services between Kuching International Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok. AirBorneo is expected to operate 14 flights per week on the Kuching–Suvarnabhumi route throughout the 2026/2027 winter schedule, which runs from 25 Oct 2026 to 27 March 2027. According to CAAT, other airlines that have also received new slot allocations for the season are Riyadh Air from Saudi Arabia, Virgin Atlantic from the United Kingdom and SkyUp Nistru from Moldova which will operate charter flight services. -- BERNAMA

SEOUL, South Korea, June 15 -- International fans traveling to South Korea for K-pop concerts and other live performances can now use a ticket resale service designed to make transactions safer and more convenient. Ticketbay, a South Korean ticket resale marketplace, launched its global service recently and is providing escrow-based transactions and multilingual support for users around the world.     Many of Korea's major ticketing platforms rely on domestic identity verification systems, creating significant barriers for international fans seeking access to official ticket purchasing channels. As a result, overseas fans have often relied on transactions conducted through social media platforms. These transactions can expose buyers to risks such as tickets not being delivered after payment, or counterfeit or duplicate tickets that may result in denied entry at venues. Ticketbay's global service was designed to address these concerns through a more secure transaction structure. At the core of the platform is an escrow-based payment system. Ticketbay holds the buyer's payment until the ticket has been successfully delivered and the purchase has been confirmed, releasing the funds to the seller only after the transaction is completed. This structure helps prevent common risks associated with informal social media transactions, including sellers disappearing after receiving advance payment or delivering invalid tickets. The platform offers additional safeguards beyond escrow protection. If a performance is officially canceled, customers receive a full refund of the purchase amount. Ticketbay also offers an optional paid protection service that provides reimbursement if a customer is denied entry at the venue despite presenting a ticket purchased through the platform. For international visitors who often travel to Korea specifically to attend performances, including purchasing airline tickets and arranging accommodations, this serves as an additional layer of protection and peace of mind. The service also offers greater payment accessibility for international users. In addition to credit cards, customers can make payments through PayPal, WeChat Pay, and Alipay, allowing them to use familiar payment methods without the need for separate currency exchange procedures. Customer support is available in English, Japanese, and Chinese, while ticket delivery options include both international shipping and local pickup in Seoul. Within a month of launch, Ticketbay's global service recorded approximately 70,000 site visits and attracted more than 2,000 new registrations from users across 69 countries, with the largest numbers coming from Japan, China, the United States, Indonesia, and Singapore. "As more international fans travel to Korea for K-pop concerts and live events, demand is growing for a trusted platform where fans can buy and sell tickets safely regardless of language or location," Ticketbay said. "By combining escrow-based transaction protection, multilingual support, and convenient international payment options, we aim to improve access to K-pop concerts and Korean live performances for fans around the world." On a typical Saturday morning, while much of the city is still waking up, dozens of Malaysians are already lacing up their running shoes, rolling out yoga mats or gathering for a cycling session with friends. What brings them together is not competition or the pursuit of athletic excellence. Instead, many are searching for something much simpler — a healthier lifestyle, a supportive community and a break from the pressures of everyday life. Across Malaysia, wellness and fitness communities are growing rapidly, attracting people from all walks of life. Whether it is a neighbourhood running club, a weekend hiking group or a community yoga class at a public park, these gatherings are becoming an important part of how Malaysians stay active and connected. For 29-year-old marketing executive Sarah Lim, joining a running club last year was initially about improving her fitness. What she did not expect was the sense of belonging she would find. "I thought I was signing up to exercise," she says. "But I ended up making friends who encourage me not just during runs, but in life as well." Sarah's experience is becoming increasingly common. As work schedules become more demanding and digital interactions replace face-to-face connections, many Malaysians are turning to wellness communities to fill a social gap. Unlike traditional gyms, where workouts can often feel solitary, community-based fitness activities offer a shared experience. Conversations happen between stretches, friendships are formed during long walks and support is readily available when motivation begins to fade. The appeal extends beyond physical health. Mental wellness has become a growing priority for many Malaysians, particularly among younger adults navigating fast-paced careers and rising daily pressures. Activities such as yoga, meditation and nature hikes are gaining popularity as people seek healthier ways to manage stress. For some, simply spending time outdoors and being present with others can have a powerful impact. "It's not about running the fastest or climbing the highest mountain," says outdoor enthusiast Amirul Hakim, who regularly participates in hiking groups around the Klang Valley. "It's about disconnecting from work for a few hours and reconnecting with yourself." Social media has also played a role in fueling the movement. Platforms such as Instagram and TikTok are filled with local fitness communities sharing their activities, inspiring others to join and making wellness feel more accessible. Yet many participants believe the real value lies beyond the photos and fitness trackers. What keeps people returning week after week is the human connection. At a time when loneliness and burnout have become increasingly common topics of conversation, wellness communities offer something many people may not realise they need: a support system. The beauty of the trend is that it does not require expensive memberships or specialised equipment. A comfortable pair of shoes, a willingness to show up and an open mind are often enough. As more Malaysians embrace active lifestyles, wellness is gradually becoming less about appearance and more about overall well-being. The focus is shifting from achieving a perfect body to building healthier habits, stronger relationships and greater balance in everyday life. In many ways, the rise of wellness communities reflects a broader cultural change. Malaysians are beginning to recognise that health is not only measured by physical strength or fitness levels, but also by the quality of their connections, their mental well-being and their sense of purpose. And perhaps that is why, every weekend, more people are choosing to gather in parks, trails and community spaces across the country. They may arrive as strangers, but many leave feeling healthier, happier and a little less alone. -- MINUTESMY / SUGAN BALAN

BUKIT MERTAJAM, JUNE 15 -- The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has agreed to increase the Community Sports Fund (DSK) allocation for Penang after the state became one of the earliest and fastest to fully utilize the RM800,000 funds channeled this year. Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the National Youth and Sports Department (JBSN) will submit an application to obtain the additional allocation. "Penang is among the earliest and fastest to complete the DSK. JBSN will submit an application and I agree for Penang to receive additional funds." "I request youth organisations to use the funds as best as possible, move to the grassroots level and ensure that programmes continue to be implemented," he said when officiating the National Youth Day 2026 celebration at the Penang level on Sunday night. Also present was the state Youth, Sports and Health Committee Chairman, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen. Mohammed Taufiq said that DSK does not just support sports activities and efforts to produce more athletes, but also serves as a platform to connect young people with the local community. He said that KBS also channeled a Sports Matching Grant for Window 1 and Window 2 totaling RM500,000 as well as assistance to the 2026 Youth Organisation of RM106,000 to Penang. According to him, the allocation is among the government's investments to expand access to community sports activities, empower youth organisations, promote healthy lifestyles and increase young people's participation in youth development and sports programmes. "I want youth organisations in Penang to actively apply for SejaTi MADANI funds after the Prime Minister approved an allocation of RM250 million for the benefit of youth organisations nationwide. "Youth development programs need to be implemented continuously and not just once so that they can have a high impact and direct benefits for the group concerned," he said. -- BERNAMA

In the latest update today, the national team has collected 1,086.22 points, moving up two places from their previous position of 138th in the world. Thailand remains Southeast Asia’s top-ranked team at 94th, ahead of Vietnam (99), Indonesia (118), the Philippines (135) and Singapore (148). Japan holds its position as Asia’s top-ranked side at 18th in the world, followed by Iran in 20th and South Korea in 25th. -- BERNAMA

ISTANBUL, June 13 -- Mexico claimed an easy 2-0 victory on Thursday in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against South Africa, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. Julian Quinones scored the first goal of the tournament, placing Mexico in an early lead in the 10th minute. Mexico dominated the rest of the half with 10 shots, with two on target, while South Africa struggled to create chances. South African Teboho Mokoena got the first yellow card of the tournament, followed shortly thereafter by Mexican Brian Gutierrez. Shortly after the second half started, South African Yaya Sithole denied Gutierrez a clear goalscoring opportunity and was sent off with the first red card of the tournament, leaving Bafana Bafana with only 10 players on the pitch. Sithole's red card was the first in a World Cup opening match since Bolivian Marco Etcheverry’s against Germany in 1994. Subbing in at minute 66, Gilberto Mora, at age 17 years and 239 days, became the youngest player to represent Mexico in the World Cup. Mexico doubled the lead with veteran striker Raul Jimenez’s header in the 67th minute. South Africa went down to 9 players when Themba Zwane was sent off for violent conduct in the 85th minute, the first time this had happened since Portugal and the Netherlands both had two players dismissed against each other in the 2006 round of 16. Mexican Cesar Montes got a straight red card for denying South African Khuliso Mudau a goalscoring opportunity dropping Mexico to 10 players. In the end, Mexico rose to the top of the leaderboard of Group A, while South Africa are at the bottom. -- BERNAMA-ANADOLU

In a football landscape increasingly shaped by multiculturalism, few stories are as inspiring as that of Nishan Velupillay. The young Australian footballer has emerged not only as one of the country's most promising talents but also as a powerful symbol of representation for the Tamil and South Asian communities across Australia and beyond. At just 25 years old, Velupillay has already established himself as a key player for Melbourne Victory and earned recognition at the highest level with the Socceroos. His rise from Melbourne's football pathways to the international stage reflects the rewards of talent, determination and perseverance. Yet his significance extends far beyond goals, assists and match statistics. For decades, professional football in Australia has benefited from the contributions of migrants and their descendants. However, players of South Asian heritage have often remained underrepresented at the elite level despite their communities' deep passion for the sport. Velupillay's breakthrough challenges that narrative and offers a new source of inspiration for aspiring athletes from similar backgrounds. What makes his journey particularly compelling is the quiet confidence with which he has embraced both his Australian identity and his Tamil heritage. In an era where athletes are increasingly aware of their influence beyond the field, Velupillay has become an example of how sporting success can help foster greater inclusion and visibility. Young footballers who may once have struggled to see themselves represented now have a role model competing on some of the biggest stages in the game. His performances have justified the growing attention. Blessed with pace, directness and a willingness to take on defenders, Velupillay embodies the modern attacking player. His ability to create opportunities and change the tempo of a match has made him a valuable asset for both club and country. More importantly, he has shown a maturity that suggests his best years are still ahead of him. Australian football has often searched for the next generation of stars capable of inspiring supporters and driving the sport forward. While it is too early to place excessive expectations on any young player, Velupillay has demonstrated the qualities needed to become one of the faces of the national team in the years to come. Beyond Australia, his success resonates with Tamil communities worldwide. From Sri Lanka to Malaysia, Singapore, Canada and the United Kingdom, many view his achievements with pride. His story illustrates how sport can transcend borders and connect communities through shared aspirations and cultural identity. As Australia prepares for future international competitions, players like Nishan Velupillay represent more than just footballing talent. They embody the diversity, resilience and ambition that define modern Australia. Whether he becomes a household name or not, his impact is already being felt by a generation of young athletes who now believe that the path to the highest level is open to them. In many ways, Nishan Velupillay's greatest contribution may not be the goals he scores, but the barriers he helps break. That is a legacy that could endure long after his playing career ends. -- MINUTESMY / SUGAN BALAN

The passing of Bharathiraja marks the end of one of the most transformative chapters in Indian cinema. More than a director, he was a storyteller who changed the language of Tamil filmmaking and redefined how ordinary people, especially those from rural India, were portrayed on screen. His death at the age of 84 leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and film lovers alike. Before Bharathiraja arrived in the late 1970s, Tamil cinema was largely dominated by studio sets, urban narratives and theatrical storytelling. Then came 16 Vayathinile in 1977, a film that broke conventions and introduced audiences to the raw beauty of village life. With dusty roads, green fields and characters who spoke the language of ordinary people, Bharathiraja brought realism to Tamil cinema in a way that had rarely been seen before. Many critics regard the film as a turning point that changed the course of South Indian filmmaking. What made Bharathiraja extraordinary was not merely his ability to tell stories but his commitment to telling stories that mattered. Through films such as Muthal Mariyathai, Vedham Pudhithu, Karuthamma and Kizhakku Cheemayile, he explored themes of caste discrimination, social inequality, female infanticide, love, honour and human dignity. At a time when commercial cinema often shied away from uncomfortable truths, Bharathiraja confronted them with courage and conviction. His influence extended far beyond the stories he told. Bharathiraja became a launching pad for countless talents who would later dominate Indian cinema. Actors, writers, technicians and musicians found opportunities under his guidance. His keen eye for talent helped shape the careers of many artists who went on to become household names. He was affectionately known as "Iyakkunar Imayam" — the "Peak of Directors" — a title earned through decades of artistic excellence rather than mere popularity. Despite achieving immense success, Bharathiraja never lost touch with his roots. His films consistently celebrated the culture, traditions and emotional complexities of rural Tamil Nadu. He gave a voice to communities that were often overlooked by mainstream cinema and ensured that their stories became part of the larger cultural conversation. In doing so, he preserved a slice of Tamil heritage for future generations. His achievements were recognised nationally and internationally. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he won six National Film Awards and numerous other honours, including the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards. Yet his greatest achievement cannot be measured by trophies or accolades. It lies in the emotional connection millions of viewers felt with the worlds he created. In recent years, Bharathiraja faced declining health and personal tragedy, including the heartbreaking loss of his son, actor-director Manoj Bharathiraja. Yet even as age slowed him physically, his influence on Indian cinema remained undiminished. Today, as tributes pour in from across the film industry, Tamil cinema mourns not just the loss of a filmmaker but the loss of a visionary who changed the way stories were told. Bharathiraja showed that cinema could be both artistic and accessible, entertaining and socially relevant. He proved that the most powerful stories often emerge from the lives of ordinary people. The lights may have dimmed on the life of Bharathiraja, but the worlds he created will continue to live on. Every time a filmmaker ventures beyond the city to tell a story rooted in the soil, every time a film challenges social injustice through human emotion, and every time audiences connect with the authenticity of rural life on screen, Bharathiraja's spirit endures. Legends do not disappear when they die. They become part of a culture's collective memory. Bharathiraja is now one such legend.

As Johor moves closer to its next state election, voters from all communities will be assessing the performance of the current administration and deciding which leadership they believe can best serve their interests. For many within the Indian community, that assessment may increasingly be shaped by a simple question: who has delivered tangible results on long-standing issues affecting the community? A recent example often cited by supporters of Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi is the completion of the Sri Maha Muniswarar Hall in Ulu Tiram. While political debates frequently revolve around promises and manifestos, the project has become a symbol of what many view as effective governance and follow-through. The hall's construction began in 1999 but encountered years of delays before eventually being abandoned in 2016. In 2022, following a visit to the site, Onn Hafiz approved RM500,000 to revive the project. Today, the completed facility serves as a venue for cultural activities, educational programmes, welfare initiatives, weddings, and community gatherings. To many residents and community leaders, the significance of the hall extends beyond its physical structure. It represents the resolution of an issue that had remained dormant for years and demonstrates a willingness by the state government to engage with grassroots concerns. Education has also remained a key issue for the Indian community. Under the current administration, Johor approved two new Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) schools—SJKT Impian Emas and SJKT Taman Universiti. Given the limited number of new Tamil school approvals nationwide in recent years, supporters argue that this reflects a commitment to ensuring educational opportunities for future generations. Another notable development is the establishment of the Kompleks Upacara Terakhir Hindu in Kampung Telok Jawa. Supported by an allocation of RM1.9 million and built on land granted by the Sultan of Johor, the facility includes a crematorium that serves communities in Tebrau and Pasir Gudang. The complex was officially opened on June 1, 2026. Additionally, the state government has approved land matters involving 17 Hindu temples across Johor, helping address concerns surrounding legal recognition and long-term security for places of worship. Welfare initiatives, including Bantuan Kasih Johor and food basket programmes, have also continued to assist lower-income families navigating rising living costs. These developments have led some observers to compare the current administration's record with previous governments. Critics of Pakatan Harapan's tenure in Johor between 2018 and 2020 argue that several long-standing community issues—including temple land matters, Tamil school development, and key infrastructure projects—saw limited progress during that period. Supporters of the current administration point out that the Ulu Tiram hall itself remained incomplete for years before funding was allocated and construction resumed under the present government. They contend that visible outcomes matter more than political rhetoric when evaluating leadership performance. State-level governance often determines the pace of progress on practical issues such as temple land approvals, school development, crematorium facilities, and community infrastructure. These are matters that require administrative efficiency, policy continuity, and sustained engagement between government agencies and local communities. Whether voters ultimately support Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan, or another political coalition remains a personal choice. However, it is understandable why some members of Johor's Indian community view the current administration favourably, citing projects that have moved beyond announcements and into reality. The opening of the Sri Maha Muniswarar Hall serves as a reminder that communities often judge governments not only by what they promise but by what they successfully deliver. As the next state election approaches, that record of delivery is likely to remain a significant factor in shaping voter sentiment. R. GEORGE TOWN, JUNE 15 -- The Ministry of Education (KPM) has given an assurance that no Chinese national-type schools (SJKC) or Tamil national-type schools (SJKT) will be closed under the administration of the Civil Government. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the stance reflected the government's commitment to ensuring that all school streams continue to be maintained as part of the national education system. He said the government understood the concerns often expressed by the community, especially the Chinese and Indian communities, regarding the future of vernacular schools, including the issue of student shortages and challenges related to school sites. "Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has repeatedly, both in Parliament and outside Parliament, stressed that vernacular schools are an important part of our education system. "The Madani Government's commitment is to guarantee that no school, whether SJKC or SJKT, will be closed. We will maintain all existing schools," he said at the Handing Over of Approval Letter for the Construction of the New SJKT Rajaji Building, here, today, which was also attended by the Chairman of the Penang Tamil Schools Special Committee, Datuk Seri S Sundarajoo. Kah Woh said that previously there had been various concerns regarding the possibility of certain schools being closed or merged, in addition to the position of vernacular schools which was often questioned by certain parties. Therefore, he said the government's guarantee is hoped to give confidence to school governing boards (LPS), educators and local communities to continue to focus on the development of their respective schools. He stressed that the Ministry of Education will continue to pay attention to the development of all school streams in the country in line with the government's aspirations to ensure that access to quality education can be enjoyed by every student regardless of background. Meanwhile, he said the increase in maintenance allocation from RM20 million to RM50 million for SJKT announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last January was part of efforts to strengthen education infrastructure nationwide, in addition to ensuring that basic school facilities were in a safe, conducive and suitable condition for the teaching and learning process. Apart from that, he said, it also reflects the Madani Government's concern for the current needs of vernacular schools, especially those facing issues with building maintenance and basic facilities, with distribution being made in a more structured manner based on the actual needs of each school. In a related development, Kah Woh said 22 SJKTs with government-aided school status in Penang will receive funds totaling RM1.156 million for the purchase and replacement of furniture through allocations from the Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (MITRA) under the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA). He said the implementation of the furniture supply would be carried out within one to two months after the process of matching school needs was completed with the school administration in the state involved. -- BERNAMA

SEREMBAN, June 15 (Bernama) -- A total of 5,953 police personnel and members of other agencies will be deployed throughout the Negeri Sembilan state election period to ensure the democratic process proceeds smoothly and remains orderly. State police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the figure comprises 4,845 senior police officers and rank-and-file personnel, while the remainder will serve as support personnel, including members of the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) and police volunteer reserve. “We are maintaining a high level of readiness through various comprehensive preparations that have been put in place from the outset, including security measures, traffic control, monitoring of campaign activities, law enforcement, and preparations for any eventuality throughout the election period,” he told Bernama today. He said the police would continue to conduct ongoing assessments and have not ruled out the possibility of seeking additional assistance from other contingents if necessary to strengthen existing resources and ensure operational requirements are carried out more effectively. Meanwhile, Alzafny said the police would continue to respect the right of all parties to conduct campaign activities as provided for under the law. “Accordingly, security monitoring and control measures will be intensified to ensure that all campaign activities, including political ceramah, party processions and election-related programmes, are conducted peacefully and in compliance with regulations set by the authorities,” he said. He said stern action would be taken against any individual or party found violating the law, inciting provocation, or engaging in any act that could disrupt public order and undermine the smooth conduct of the democratic process. He also urged all political parties, candidates, supporters and members of the public to uphold a culture of political maturity, respect differing views and comply with the law throughout the campaign period. The public was also advised not to engage in any form of provocation, dissemination of false information, or actions that could create tension and jeopardise social harmony. IPOH, June 12 -- The establishment of any school in the country is subject to the Education Act and cannot operate without approval from the relevant authorities, according to Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh. He said the Ministry of Education constantly monitors compliance with educational rules and laws to ensure that every institution offering learning operates in accordance with established guidelines. "The establishment of any school is subject to the Education Act, and naturally, no school can be set up without prior approval," he told reporters after attending the 69th Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan (SMJK) Ave Maria Convent Academic Excellence Ceremony here today. Wong was speaking in response to allegations concerning the existence of a school run by the Rohingya community in Kuala Terengganu. Therefore, he said the ministry would leave the matter to the relevant authorities. Media reports yesterday indicated that a school believed to be operating for the ethnic Rohingya community in Kampung Ladang Titian, Kuala Terengganu, has triggered concern and unease among residents since February. Earlier, Wong congratulated 75 of the school's students for excellent 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination results, including 37 who achieved 10 to 12 As. He said the results reflect the commitment of teachers, the school board, the Parent-Teacher Association and students to raising academic standards. At the event, he also announced a RM50,000 special allocation from his office for student-led projects at the school. -- BERNAMA

– BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today described the groundbreaking ceremony for the Bukit Kiara Permanent Housing Project as a historic milestone that reflects the MADANI Government's commitment to justice, dignity and the welfare of the people. Speaking at the ceremony, Anwar said the project marks the end of a 44-year struggle for residents of Rumah Panjang Bukit Kiara, who have lived in temporary settlements under challenging conditions while awaiting a permanent housing solution. "This is a meaningful and joyous moment, not only for the residents of Rumah Panjang Bukit Kiara, but also proof that an administration guided by MADANI values will always place justice, courtesy and the dignity of the people at the forefront," he said. The Prime Minister noted that the project represents a concrete step towards resolving a long-standing issue that has affected generations of residents and demonstrates the government's determination to ensure citizens receive their rightful access to proper housing. He said the process of addressing the matter required careful consideration and collaboration among various stakeholders to identify the best possible solution while safeguarding the interests of the affected community. Anwar also expressed appreciation to all parties involved in making the project a reality, stressing that the experience underscored the importance of respecting legislative processes and upholding the role of national institutions. "The rights and welfare of those in need must continue to be protected, with justice enjoyed by all citizens regardless of race, religion or background," he said. He added that the government's efforts to uplift the urban poor would remain a priority, in line with its commitment to ensuring that no segment of society is left behind in the nation's development agenda. According to Anwar, development must be inclusive and benefit all levels of society, as true national progress can only be achieved when every citizen is able to participate in and benefit from economic and social advancement. During the ceremony, the Prime Minister also announced a RM1 million grant to assist longhouse residents transitioning into their new homes. The allocation will be used to provide residential maintenance subsidies for a period of three years and will be managed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). He said the initiative forms part of the MADANI Government's ongoing commitment to preserving the welfare and quality of life of residents after they relocate to their new permanent housing units. -- MINUTESMY -- SOURCE: FB ANWAR IBRAHIM

-- BERNAMA

IPOH, Jun 15 -- Strict enforcement action will be taken against any local citizen found renting out their business premises to Rohingya refugees to carry out illegal business activities in Perak. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said this was because business licenses issued by the authorities to any individual cannot be transferred or used by other parties, whether local or foreign, including refugees.     "This matter is usually within the jurisdiction of local authorities (PBT) and will be implemented in accordance with the regulations and laws set out. "In certain circumstances, there are locals who take the easy way out by renting out their premises rather than running their own businesses," he said.  He said this at a press conference after attending the Perak State Government's 4th Series 2026 Customer Friendly Day Program at the Indera Mulia Stadium here today. Saarani said that if there is a violation, it is an offence against the license conditions and action can be taken, including the revocation of the license under the jurisdiction of the local authority. In another development, he said the state government has allocated RM1.374 million as incentives for 324 government retirees who ended their service between Jan 1 and Dec 31, 2025. He said the incentive provision involved retirees from state civil services, local government units and eligible state statutory bodies as a token of appreciation for their services and contributions throughout their service to the government. "All retirees will receive RM4,000 each in the form of Premium Savings Certificates (SSP)," he said. -- BERNAMA

-- BERNAMA
