UN Mobilising, Coordinating Relief In Response To Venezuela Quakes

NEW YORK, June 25 -- The United Nations (UN) is mobilising assistance and working closely with the government and aid partners in response to the Venezuela earthquake emergency, UN humanitarians said on Thursday, reported Xinhua. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that it is orchestrating the deployment of urban search-and-rescue teams arriving from several countries. Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher said in a statement that the UN and its humanitarian partners are fully mobilised to support the people of Venezuela. UN agencies in Venezuela are mobilising assistance and will deliver support as quickly as possible, he said, adding that the UN team is in close contact with Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodriguez and relevant national authorities. Fletcher said that even before the earthquakes, nearly eight million people in Venezuela were in need of humanitarian support. “This disaster risks deepening existing vulnerabilities.” Stephane Dujarric, chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency, while international support is rapidly mobilising multiple offers of assistance from across the region and beyond. A central coordination hub has been established in Caracas, and the UN is supporting efforts to ensure that assistance reaches those most in need as quickly and effectively as possible, he said. The spokesman said that reports indicated significant destruction across several states, including in the capital Caracas, reportedly killing and injuring many people, while others remain trapped or are still missing. Critical infrastructure has been damaged, and basic services have been disrupted. The secretary-general welcomed the offers of solidarity and support from UN member states. “The secretary-general expresses his solidarity with the people and Government of Venezuela,” Dujarric said. Jonassen Leaves Door Wide Open For Tze Yong’s Return To BAM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 -- National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen has left the door wide open for Ng Tze Yong to return to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), should he choose to do so. He insisted that the national governing body will always welcome the men's singles shuttler back, despite his decision to turn professional. Jonassen revealed that the decision came after a series of frank discussions between both parties, and stressed that it was the best possible outcome for everyone involved. "I keep an open-door policy. If he decides to come back, he knows he's always welcome here,” he told reporters after a training session at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM), Bukit Kiara, here today. Jonassen admitted it was tough to part ways with a player of Tze Yong's calibre and natural flair, especially since he had been eagerly looking forward to working closely with the 26-year-old when he joined BAM in 2024. "From a personal side, it's always very tough to lose a player with the qualities and potential he has as a natural, really talented badminton player,” he said. Johor Polls: 593 Forms Sold, 133 Prospective Candidates Paid Deposits – EC

JOHOR BAHRU, June 26 -- A total of 593 nomination forms for the Johor state election have been sold so far, but only 133 prospective candidates have confirmed their participation by paying the required deposit. Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the number was expected to increase, as prospective candidates still have until the start of the nomination process tomorrow morning to complete the formalities. "As of this morning, we have sold 593 nomination forms at returning officer offices throughout the state. Of that number, 133 candidates have made the deposit payment, meaning they have confirmed their participation so far. "We still have time until tomorrow, and we hope candidates intending to contest will come earlier to make their payments so that the nomination process can proceed more smoothly," he told reporters after inspecting preparations at the nomination centre for the Maharani constituency at the Muar District Office here today. Ramlan gave an assurance that all 56 nomination centres across the state were fully prepared after the EC conducted two consecutive days of trial runs. On security arrangements, Ramlan reminded all political parties, candidates and supporters to comply with regulations and avoid any provocation to ensure nomination proceeds in a peaceful and orderly manner. Maharani returning officer Zainal Eran said supporters of political parties attending tomorrow's nomination process would be placed in designated areas separated by barriers to prevent any untoward incidents. "Only the candidate, proposer and one supporter will be allowed to enter the nomination centre in accordance with the established procedures. "Other supporters will be placed at the field in front of the centre, where barriers will be erected to separate supporters of each party to prevent any undesirable incidents," he said. Pakatan Harapan has announced it would field candidates in all 56 seats, comprising 20 from PKR, 19 from Amanah and 17 from DAP. Barisan Nasional will also contest all 56 seats, fielding 36 UMNO candidates, 16 MCA candidates and four MIC candidates. Perikatan Nasional has announced that PAS will contest 11 seats, Bersatu 16, the Malaysian Indian People's Party five and Pejuang one. Meanwhile, the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance will contest four seats, Parti Sosialis Malaysia one seat, while Parti Bersama Malaysia is set to make its electoral debut by contesting 15 state seats. Part-time Surveyor Charged With Abandonment, Leading To Death Of 41 Cats

PETALING JAYA, June 26 -- A part-time surveyor pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to charges of abandoning 36 cats, causing them to starve, and leading to the deaths of 41 cats in March.  Lee Reo Jin, 49, entered the plea after both charges were read out before Judge Noor Ruzilawati Mohd Nor.  For abandoning 36 live cats in conditions likely to cause them pain due to starvation at an apartment unit in Subang Jaya, the charge was framed under Subsection 29(1)(p) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772), punishable under Subsection 29(1) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM100,000, or imprisonment of up to three years, or both, upon conviction.  For the second charge, Lee, as the owner of the cats, was accused of causing the death of 41 cats at the same place and time. The charge was brought under Subsection 29(1)(r) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772), which carries similar penalties.  Prosecuting officer from the Selangor Veterinary Services Department, Mohd Sharif Sabran, offered bail at RM20,000 for both charges with one surety, along with an additional condition that the accused’s passport be surrendered to the court.  However, Lee, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower bail on the grounds that she had no fixed income.  The court allowed bail at RM10,000 for both charges with one surety, and the additional condition requested by the prosecution.  Noor Ruzilawati then set Aug 7 for case mention for the appointment of counsel.  It was earlier reported that a team from the Selangor Veterinary Services Department conducted a raid on an apartment unit in Subang Jaya on March 13 following complaints of a foul odour emanating from the unit.  The raid uncovered 41 cat carcasses wrapped and stored in a freezer, with some found scattered in the living room and cages.  In addition, 36 cats were found alive in cages, in an emaciated and weakened condition. -- BERNAMA

Johor Polls: Rain Forecast In Seven Districts On Nomination Day

JOHOR BAHRU, June 26 -- Rain is forecast to affect seven of the 10 districts in the state tomorrow morning, potentially posing a slight “challenge” for prospective candidates and supporters on nomination day for the Johor state election.  Johor director of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), Azlai Ta’at, said rain is expected in Johor Bahru, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Tangkak and Kulai. However, clear weather is expected in the morning in the other three districts of Segamat, Kluang and Mersing. “Minimum temperatures across the state are expected to range between 24 and 25 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures will be between 31 and 34 degrees Celsius, with Segamat recording the highest at up to 34 degrees Celsius. “The public, including supporters of contesting candidates, are advised to stay alert to any changes in weather conditions,” he told Bernama here today. Thunderstorms are also expected to mark the start of the campaigning period, which will officially begin immediately after the nomination process ends tomorrow. MetMalaysia forecast thunderstorms in Johor Bahru, Segamat, Kluang, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Mersing and Kulai in the afternoon, while Batu Pahat and Tangkak are expected to experience rain, and Muar is forecast to be hot. The nomination process is scheduled to take place from 9 am to 10 am at 56 nomination centres, before the official announcement of eligible candidates is made by returning officers.
