MetMalaysia denies offers to procure jobs, services via social media

KUALA LUMPUR, JUN 30 -- The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) denies allegations of issuing any applications or offers related to the procurement of work, supplies or services via social media applications. MetMalaysia, in a statement today, informed that it was taking the matter seriously after receiving complaints about irresponsible individuals posing as department officials to offer non-existent procurement deals.  "The department has never issued any such applications or offers via social media applications such as WhatsApp or Telegram, nor via email other than the department's official email," the statement said. MetMalaysia also filed a police report regarding the matter and advised members of the public who are victims or receive suspicious applications to immediately file a report with the authorities to assist in the investigation. All MetMalaysia procurement matters are officially carried out only through the eProcurement System in accordance with the government procurement procedures and regulations in force. "The public, companies and suppliers are advised to always be vigilant and to first check the validity of any offer or application associated with MetMalaysia," the statement said. -- BERNAMA

Decision On Syed Saddiq Postponed To July 13, Judge On Sick Leave

PUTRAJAYA, June 30 -- The final appeal decision of the prosecution against the acquittal of Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, scheduled for today, has been postponed to July 13 due to a  member of Federal Court panel being on sick leave. Court of Appeal president Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais, who headed the three-judge Federal Court panel, said the court was prepared with the decision, but could not give the decision today. "I and Yang Arif Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah are in court, but Yang Arif Datuk Che Ruzima is not with us because we were told that Yang Arif Che Ruzima is unwell and is on sick leave for today and tomorrow. It doesn't seem right to give the decision without one panel member," he said. Judge Abu Bakar said the court was informed of Che Ruzima's condition late yesterday evening. "We could do it yesterday by telling the registry to inform the parties that the decision could not be delivered today, but it was late in the day. I thought it would not be proper to do that. That is why I am up on the bench today to inform everyone. We think we need to deliver the decision on July 13," he said. Today's proceedings were attended by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib and Farah Ezlin Yusop Khan while Syed Saddiq was represented by lawyers Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, Datuk S. Ambiga and Lim Wei Jeit. On June 25, 2025, the Court of Appeal acquitted and discharged Syed Saddiq, 33, of four charges of abetting criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering involving Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada) funds, after allowing his appeal to set aside the conviction and sentence of seven years' imprisonment, two strokes of the cane and a fine of RM10 million decided by the High Court on 9 Nov 2023. Bursa Malaysia Opens Marginally Higher

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 -- Bursa Malaysia opened marginally higher on Tuesday, tracking Wall Street’s overnight gains as investor sentiment was lifted by the continued pause in military strikes between the US and Iran. At 9.10 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) edged up 0.24 of a point to 1,666.15 from Monday’s close of 1,665.91. The benchmark index opened 1.37 points higher at 1,667.28. Market breadth was positive, with gainers outnumbering losers 181 to 130, while 297 counters were unchanged, 2,082 untraded, and 79 suspended. Turnover stood at 157.26 million shares valued at RM89.56 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the FBM KLCI pared earlier losses to end little changed yesterday, possibly due to late bargain-hunting, although investors remained cautious over external uncertainties, as reflected in the day’s relatively low trading volume of 2.7 billion shares. “With no clear signs of West Asia tensions easing, we anticipate another lacklustre day on the local bourse, with the FBM KLCI expected to trade within the 1,660-1,670 range today,” he told Bernama. Among heavyweight stocks, Maybank and Tenaga Nasional bagged two sen each to RM10.82 and RM14.28, respectively, and Public Bank increased three sen to RM4.82. CIMB was flat at RM7.45, and IHH fell four sen to RM8.36. Of the active counters, ACE Market debutant Liftech Group eased 1.5 sen to 27.5 sen, while Tanco, Senheng and Dagang Nexchange were half-a-sen higher at 15 sen, 15 sen and 42.5 sen, respectively. SNS added three sen to 53.5 sen. On the gainers’ list, OCB soared 13.5 sen to 99.5 sen, Apollo and Dutch Lady gained 10 sen each to RM5.95 and RM32.60, respectively, Hume Cement improved seven sen to RM2.99, Genting Plantations moved up six sen to RM5.26. Among the top losers, Malaysian Pacific Industries shed RM1 to RM48.10, Batu Kawan dropped 80 sen to RM20.64, Tradeplus slipped 17 sen to RM4.93, KLCC decreased 15 sen to RM8.98, and Press Metal lost 10 sen to RM7.68. On the broader market, the FBM Emas Index was 3.81 points higher at 12,383.72, the FBM Top 100 Index added 2.34 points to 12,215.43, but the FBM Emas Shariah Index eased 3.38 points to 12,249.14. The FBM Mid 70 Index went up 5.82 points to 17,854.54, and the FBM ACE Index climbed 8.28 points to 4,797.57. Maszlee Malik Plans Mobile App To Improve Constituent Services In Puteri Wangsa

JOHOR BAHRU, June 30 -- Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Puteri Wangsa seat, Dr Maszlee Malik, plans to introduce a dedicated mobile application to allow residents to report local issues and submit complaints more efficiently if elected in the 16th Johor state election. Maszlee said a practical, technology-driven approach is needed given the constituency's large geographical area and diverse population, which ranges from affluent neighbourhoods such as Austin Heights to Felda Ulu Tebrau. “With such a diverse constituency, we need to be practical and sophisticated. A mobile app could be one of the solutions,” he told Bernama in an exclusive interview recently. The former education minister said the app would also help identify vulnerable groups, including single mothers and persons with disabilities (PWDs), who may be eligible for government assistance but have been overlooked because of bureaucratic hurdles or limited access to information. He said he hopes to draw inspiration from the community engagement model adopted by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who uses digital platforms alongside social media to gather feedback directly from residents. “There is much I can learn from Zohran Mamdani. He engages directly with the community and uses dedicated apps, in addition to social media, to enable residents to raise their concerns,” he said. Beyond the mobile app, Maszlee said he intends to maintain regular engagement with non-governmental organisations, residents’ associations and government agencies, while also holding town hall meetings to address local issues. On the campaign trail, he said his team is adopting a targeted social media strategy to reach voters who are less accessible through conventional campaigning, particularly young voters and Malaysians working in Singapore. “These groups may not have the time to meet us during walkabouts, so social media provides the most effective way to engage them,” he said. However, Maszlee acknowledged that digital campaigning presents challenges, including algorithms and echo chambers that can limit the reach of campaign messages. To overcome this, his campaign is tailoring content to different localities and voter groups, taking into account socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicity and demographics. The strategy targets groups such as Gen Z, Malaysians working in Singapore, particularly those from the Chinese community, residents outside urban centres and working professionals. “Different communities and demographic groups have different concerns and priorities. Our messaging therefore, has to be tailored to reflect those differences,” he said. The Puteri Wangsa state seat will see a five-cornered contest involving Maszlee, Rashifa Aljunied of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA), Teow Chia Ling (Barisan Nasional), Nicholas Paul Vincent (Parti Bersama Malaysia) and independent candidate Wang Wee Siong.
