KUALA LUMPUR– Bentong Member of Parliament Young Syefura Othman has strongly condemned the alleged desecration of the Quran in Sabah, describing the act as deeply offensive and a threat to Malaysia’s social harmony.
In a statement on Wednesday, Syefura said she was referring to recent media reports and viral social media posts claiming that certain individuals had stepped on and scribbled obscene drawings on copies of the Quran.
“As a Malaysian Muslim who upholds the principles of the Rukun Negara, I strongly condemn this extremely rude, irresponsible and provocative act,” she said.
Syefura stressed that such actions not only insult the sanctity of Islam but also threaten the racial and religious harmony that Malaysians have worked hard to maintain.
She urged the Royal Malaysia Police and authorities in Sabah to carry out a thorough investigation immediately and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“The perpetrators must face legal action without compromise to send a clear message that insults against any religion will not be tolerated,” she added.
Syefura also called on all Malaysians to respect religious sensitivities in order to preserve national harmony.
“Stop insulting any religion for the sake of our country’s unity. Do not let a single irresponsible act destroy the peace we have built together,” she said.
