KUALA LUMPUR, 20 August 2026 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed the government to expedite the drafting of the e-Commerce Bill, aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s regulatory framework for the rapidly expanding digital economy.
Anwar said the legislation was necessary to ensure that the country’s laws remain relevant to developments in online commerce and provide greater protection for consumers and businesses operating in the digital space.
He stressed that the government must respond quickly to changes in the digital economy, particularly as more Malaysians conduct business, make purchases and provide services through online platforms.
The Prime Minister said the proposed legislation should help create a more organised and secure e-commerce environment while addressing emerging challenges associated with digital transactions.
He also called on the relevant ministries and agencies to work closely to ensure that the drafting process is completed efficiently and that the proposed law takes into account the interests of consumers, businesses and other stakeholders.
The move is part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s digital economy and ensure that regulations keep pace with technological developments.
The proposed e-Commerce Bill is expected to provide a clearer legal framework for online commercial activities and strengthen confidence in Malaysia’s digital marketplace.
Anwar’s directive comes as e-commerce continues to play an increasingly important role in Malaysia’s economy, with businesses and consumers becoming more dependent on digital platforms for transactions and services.
