KUALA LUMPUR, September 4 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed support for a proposal to place Lembaga Tabung Haji’s (TH) investment operations under the supervision of the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) or Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the move would help ensure stricter regulatory oversight of TH’s operations and prevent future weaknesses in governance and abuse of power.
He said efforts led by TH’s new management under its chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain were a positive step towards strengthening governance, accountability and transparency within the institution.
Anwar also voiced support for proposed amendments to the Tabung Haji Act 1995 to further strengthen the regulatory and oversight framework of the pilgrimage fund.
Earlier, Abdul Rashid said TH was refining a new regulatory framework that could place its investment operations under the statutory supervision of the SC.
The proposal follows nearly six months of discussions involving a joint task force, including representatives from the SC and BNM.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring TH’s investment activities comply with Malaysia’s capital market regulatory standards while strengthening transparency, accountability and governance within the institution.
