KUALA LUMPUR, October 5 2026 — The close relationship between His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has helped pave the way for Malaysia to host the 2026 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the strong ties between the two leaders had contributed to the return of the prestigious Formula One event to Malaysia after a nine-year absence.
The Bahrain Grand Prix was held at Sepang this year, marking the return of Formula One racing to the circuit since the last Malaysian Grand Prix in 2017.
Anwar said the development demonstrated how strong diplomatic relations could extend beyond traditional government-to-government cooperation, including into sports, tourism and economic activities.
He also highlighted the importance of leveraging major international sporting events to strengthen Malaysia’s global profile and attract visitors, investment and business opportunities.
The return of Formula One to Sepang is expected to further enhance Malaysia’s position as a regional destination for major international sporting events while strengthening its image on the global stage.
