Medical Officers, AUKU Replacement Bill Among Dewan Rakyat Focus Today

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 (Bernama) — The failure of medical officers to report for duty in Sabah and Sarawak, along with the proposed replacement of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU), are among the key issues expected to be raised in the Dewan Rakyat today.

During the Question Time, Suhaizan Kaiat (PH-Pulai) is scheduled to ask the Health Minister about the actual number of medical officers who failed to report for duty after the deadline on Oct 7, the reasons for their absence and measures being taken to address the matter.

Meanwhile, Sivakumar Varatharaju Naidu (PH-Batu Gajah) will seek an update from the Higher Education Minister on the drafting of a new law to replace AUKU 1971, including the Government’s commitment to table the Bill in Parliament in December.

Other issues scheduled to be raised include regulatory jurisdiction between the Securities Commission Malaysia and other regulatory agencies, efforts to strengthen digital literacy and artificial intelligence (AI) skills, and strategies to develop highly skilled digital talent.

Following the Question Time, the Dewan Rakyat is scheduled to proceed with the second reading of the Food (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the Courts of Judicature (Amendment) Bill 2026.

The Third Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament is being held for 37 days until Dec 8.
