KUALA LUMPUR — Meta has announced that it will remove the full encryption feature from messaging on Instagram starting May 8, 2026.
In a statement, the company said the decision was made as the feature had not been widely used by users on the platform.
Meta said users who wish to continue using fully encrypted messaging are encouraged to switch to WhatsApp, which continues to support end-to-end encryption.
End-to-end encryption ensures that messages can only be read by the sender and the recipient, preventing third parties from accessing the content of the conversation.
Meanwhile, TikTok has previously confirmed that it will not support full encryption for messaging within its application.
Separately, local social media platform Daun has recently introduced messaging features for its users.
