Agong Urges Malaysians to Reject Slander and Hatred on Social Media

SHAH ALAM: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim has urged Malaysians to uphold proper conduct on social media and refrain from misusing artificial intelligence (AI) to insult, humiliate or damage the dignity of others.

His Majesty delivered the message at the 105th Convocation Ceremony of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) at the Dewan Agung Tuanku Canselor in Shah Alam today, emphasising that good conduct is essential to preserving national unity, harmony and dignity.

Sultan Ibrahim said the rapid growth of digital technology and social media had led some individuals to use abusive, insulting and offensive language without considering the impact on their victims.

“Good conduct is not merely about politeness; it is the very essence that shapes the dignity of a nation,” His Majesty said.

The King also expressed concern over the misuse of AI to create fake images and videos intended to insult or embarrass specific individuals.

He reminded the public to respect the feelings and dignity of others, stressing that those targeted by online criticism also have families and emotions that deserve consideration.

Sultan Ibrahim further emphasised that social media should not be used to incite others, spread hatred or create divisions within society.

“Every freedom comes with responsibility. Use social media with proper conduct and respect for others,” His Majesty said.

The King also urged Malaysians to verify the authenticity of news before believing or sharing it to prevent the spread of slander and hatred.

In a separate development, Sultan Ibrahim praised UiTM for its contributions over seven decades towards developing and uplifting the Malay community through higher education.

His Majesty also consented to the renaming of the Jalan Othman Campus to the Tun Arshad Ayub Campus in honour of the late Tun Arshad Ayub, who played a significant role in the university’s establishment and development since 1965.

At the ceremony, the King congratulated the graduates, parents and UiTM community on their achievements, expressing hope that the university would continue to excel in producing knowledgeable graduates who could contribute to the nation’s progress.
