KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — Malaysia’s progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must translate into tangible improvements in people’s lives, with no one left behind, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
Anwar said the country’s projected SDG achievement had increased to 58 per cent by 2030, compared with 49 per cent last year, exceeding the global projection of 35 per cent.
In a statement following the 2026 National SDG Council Meeting, which he chaired, Anwar stressed that despite the encouraging progress, more work was needed to ensure development benefits reached all segments of society.
The meeting reviewed 10 key SDG focus areas directly linked to public well-being, including child malnutrition, mental health, the empowerment of persons with disabilities (OKU), environmental sustainability, online scams and disparities in development between states.
The discussions highlighted the need to address these challenges as Malaysia continues pursuing its sustainable development agenda.
Anwar said the SDGs should not be measured solely through statistics and targets, but by their impact on the quality of life of Malaysians, particularly vulnerable and underserved communities.
He emphasised that inclusive development remained essential to ensuring that economic and social progress benefited the entire nation.
