KUALA LUMPUR — The MADANI Government, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is accelerating flood mitigation projects to reduce economic losses and ease the burden on people affected by the disaster.
To date, six flood mitigation projects worth RM336 million have been completed, while another 82 are underway nationwide, including in Sabah and Sarawak.
Under Budget 2027, the government also announced several new projects, including the Kuching Urban Flood Mitigation Project, Phase Two of the Sungai Golok Integrated River Basin Development Project in Kelantan, and the Sungai Kemaman project in Terengganu.
The government has also allocated RM100 million for retention ponds in the Klang Valley and nearly RM320 million to repair and upgrade slopes, drainage systems and drains in local authority areas nationwide.
According to a Bank Negara Malaysia report, flood-related losses reached RM933.4 million in 2024 before declining to RM636.9 million the following year.
The implementation of flood mitigation projects, improvements to drainage systems and slope protection measures are expected to reduce flood risks and damage to homes, business premises and infrastructure.
However, addressing flooding also requires community cooperation, improved preparedness and financial protection, such as insurance and takaful, to minimise the impact of future disasters.
