Air quality monitoring in Sarawak as Samalaju records an unhealthy API reading.

Samalaju Records Unhealthy Air Quality Reading in Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 2026, Samalaju in Sarawak recorded an unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 152 at 9am on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 44 areas across Malaysia recorded moderate air quality, according to data from the Department of Environment (DOE).

The figures were published on the DOE’s Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal.

Bintulu Records Highest Moderate Reading

Bintulu, Sarawak, recorded the highest API reading among areas with moderate air quality, at 94.

Serian followed with a reading of 90. Sibu recorded 87, while Batu Muda in Kuala Lumpur registered 84.

Sri Aman recorded an API reading of 83. Kluang in Johor and Samarahan in Sarawak both recorded 82.

23 Areas Record Good Air Quality

The DOE data also showed that 23 areas recorded good air quality.

Kuala Selangor in Selangor recorded an API reading of 47. Melaka City registered 48, while Tanah Merah in Kelantan recorded 49.

How Air Quality Levels Are Classified

Malaysia uses the API to measure air pollution levels.

Readings from zero to 50 indicate good air quality. Scores from 51 to 100 are classified as moderate.

Readings between 101 and 200 are considered unhealthy. Scores from 201 to 300 indicate very unhealthy air quality, while readings above 300 are classified as hazardous.

Residents can check the latest readings through the DOE’s APIMS portal.
