Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark Review Strengthens Bid for UNESCO Recognition

AMPANG JAYA, October 29, 2026 — Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark in Selangor is undergoing a reassessment to retain its National Geopark status and strengthen preparations for possible international recognition by UNESCO in 2028.

The review examines the geopark’s progress in protecting natural heritage, developing sustainable tourism and involving local communities since it received National Geopark recognition in 2022.

Tourism Selangor said the reassessment covers geological heritage, biodiversity conservation, public education, community participation, management and partnerships with relevant agencies.

Assessment Covers Major Natural Heritage Sites

The evaluation panel visited several important locations to assess conservation efforts and tourism development.

These included Bukit Tabur, Batu Caves, the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Batu Arang, Sungai Tekala Waterfall and the hot springs at Dusun Tua and Sungai Lalang.

The panel also met local communities, Geopark Schools, Geopark Friends and tourism operators. These discussions helped assess how geopark initiatives support community participation and sustainable development.

The reassessment also involved government agencies, local councils, universities and environmental organisations.

Geopark Covers More Than 112,000 Hectares

Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark spans more than 112,000 hectares across the Gombak and Hulu Langat districts.

The area features geological formations, biodiversity and cultural heritage sites that contribute to Selangor’s natural and tourism attractions.

The reassessment allows evaluators to review the geopark’s management and identify areas for improvement. It also examines how conservation, education and tourism can support local communities while protecting the environment.

Tourism Selangor Partners With Canon Malaysia

As part of the programme, Tourism Selangor launched the official song and music video, Pesona Gombak Hulu Langat Geopark, performed by Layla Sania.

The production aims to introduce the area’s geological heritage, wildlife and cultural attractions to a wider audience.

Tourism Selangor also signed a Memorandum of Collaboration with Canon Marketing Malaysia. The partnership aims to support promotional activities, document natural heritage and develop photography and videography skills.

Both organisations also plan to support creative content production and public awareness initiatives.

UNESCO Global Geopark Recognition Targeted for 2028

Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark is working towards a possible nomination as a UNESCO Global Geopark by 2028.

The reassessment is an important step in reviewing its progress and strengthening its management practices before pursuing international recognition.

The initiative also supports Selangor’s ambition to develop its natural and cultural attractions into a sustainable, internationally recognised geotourism destination.
