Indonesia Urged to Take Action on Cross-Border Haze

JAKARTA, Oct 29 – Indonesia has been urged to take stronger action to prevent forest fires and reduce cross-border haze.

Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, Deputy Speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, said the country should respond to criticism with clear action.

He said Malaysia and Singapore had raised concerns about transboundary haze. Therefore, Indonesia should treat these concerns as an opportunity to improve its environmental protection efforts.

Indonesia Calls for Stronger Fire Prevention

Dasco said Indonesia should strengthen fire prevention and enforce environmental laws.

He also called for the restoration of damaged areas. In addition, he stressed the need to hold businesses accountable for environmental damage.

According to Dasco, Indonesia should support its response with measurable results. This would help show whether its efforts are effective.

ASEAN Cooperation Remains Important

Dasco also called for stronger cooperation among ASEAN countries.

He said regional cooperation should continue even when there is no immediate crisis. This approach could help countries prepare for future challenges.

He identified several areas that need joint action, including disaster prevention, cybersecurity, food security and energy security.

Furthermore, he said countries must work together to address problems that cross national borders.

Regional Security Goes Beyond Haze

Dasco said forest fires and floods remain major concerns for the region. Extreme weather and food security risks also require attention.

Meanwhile, he highlighted other regional challenges. These include maritime security, cross-border crime and cyber threats.

He also referred to developments in the South China Sea. These issues, he said, show why ASEAN countries need closer cooperation.

Dasco reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to an independent and active foreign policy. He said the country would continue to protect its sovereignty while supporting regional peace.
