PUTIAN, China, Oct 31 – The 11th Global Mazu Culture Forum is taking place in Putian, Fujian Province, from Oct 31 to Nov 2.
The event brings together overseas guests from 47 countries and regions. It includes a main forum, 10 thematic forums and supporting activities across 13 additional venues.
The forum will focus on Mazu culture, marine development, environmental protection and international cooperation.
Forum to Showcase Ocean Model and Weather Warning Technology
One of the key highlights is the launch of version 2.0 of the Mass Conservation Ocean Model (MaCOM).
China developed the model independently and plans to make it available as open-source technology worldwide.
The event will also feature a handover ceremony for an integrated smart terminal linked to China’s MAZU meteorological early warning solution. The terminal will be handed over to Sri Lanka.
In addition, organisers will award the first Mazu scholarships. The programme aims to support the training of meteorological professionals around the world.
According to Chinese meteorological authorities, the MAZU early warning solution had been deployed in eight countries by October 2026. These include Pakistan, Ethiopia and the Solomon Islands.
More than 50 other countries have also accessed the solution through a cloud platform.
Mazu Culture Forum to Expand International Exchanges
A separate forum in Sao Paulo, Brazil, will focus on Mazu culture and cultural exchanges between China and Brazil.
It will present the city’s legislative outcomes related to Mazu Day. Organisers will also introduce an initiative to promote academic exchanges on Mazu culture and maritime civilisation.
Meanwhile, the main thematic forums will discuss the marine economy, environmental conservation and women’s development.
The programme also includes plans to release a 2026 report on China’s maritime culture and a white paper on sustainable island development.
Participants will also discuss a framework agreement on mangrove conservation and restoration, as well as the establishment of a Mazu protection fund.
Mazu Cultural Festival to Feature Global Live Broadcast
The 28th Meizhou Mazu Cultural Tourism Festival will take place alongside the forum.
For the first time, its opening ceremony will be broadcast live to audiences worldwide.
The ceremony will showcase Mazu sacrificial rituals, which are recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage item in China.
The original dance drama Mazu will also make its world premiere in Putian.
