Gerakan Urged to Reform Campaign Strategy Ahead of Key Elections

KUALA LUMPUR — Party President Dominic Lau has called on members of Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) to embrace political reform and adopt new campaign strategies as the party prepares for upcoming state and general elections.

Speaking at Gerakan’s 58th anniversary celebration in Kuala Lumpur, Lau stressed that relying on outdated approaches would hinder the party’s ability to reconnect with voters and remain competitive.

He said transformation must go beyond rhetoric and be reflected in how the party engages the public, particularly in facing the Melaka and Johor state elections as well as Malaysia’s 16th General Election (GE16).

“Change must be meaningful and grounded in new strategies. We cannot continue using old methods if we want to win the people’s mandate,” he said as reported by Astro Awani.

Lau highlighted that unity remains a critical factor, noting that internal divisions and self-serving agendas among some leaders—an issue he said exists across political parties—could weaken Gerakan’s prospects.

He emphasised that party interests and public trust must take precedence over individual ambitions, warning that political relevance depends on collective discipline and shared purpose.

During his speech, Lau also pointed to the symbolic meaning of the number 58 in Chinese pronunciation, which звучит similar to the word “change,” describing it as a timely reminder for Gerakan to pursue political transformation.

He added that a united front, combined with renewed strategy, would be essential for the party to regain voter confidence and strengthen its position in the evolving political landscape.
