KUALA LUMPUR, April 6, 2026 — Sathiah Sudakaran, National Youth Chief of the Parti Progresif Penduduk (PPP), has expressed concern over the assessment of Moral Education in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.
Sathiah highlighted cases where students achieving A+ in nearly all other subjects fail to obtain A+ in Moral Education, raising questions about the validity and consistency of the higher-order thinking skills (KBAT) marking system used for the subject.
“Moral Education should cultivate values, ethics, and character, not serve as a barrier to recognising students’ overall academic excellence,” he said in a statement.
He described the situation as potentially demotivating for students and warned that inconsistencies in marking could undermine public confidence in the fairness of the national education system.
Sathiah urged the Ministry of Education Malaysia to:
- Review the marking scheme and answer key for Moral Education.
- Ensure transparency and consistency in the assessment process.
- Explore fairer and more objective approaches to evaluating students’ understanding and internalisation of moral values.
“Education must be fair, transparent, and appropriately recognise students’ effort and achievement,” he said. “No student should be disadvantaged due to weaknesses in the assessment system. The future of our youth must not be compromised.”
