KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 — Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo today described data as the foundation of economic growth, innovation, public services, and national competitiveness during the launch of the NEXTDC KL1 data centre in Malaysia. He said the opening of the facility reflects the growing importance of data and Malaysia’s capability to securely obtain, retain, process, access, and move data seamlessly across systems and industries. Gobind said the KL1 facility marks a significant milestone for NEXTDC as it is the company’s first data centre outside Australia and its flagship facility in Southeast Asia. According to him, the development is expected to strengthen critical business continuity for Malaysian industries, particularly sectors such as finance and oil and gas, while reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a regional digital hub. “This launch is a strong signal of confidence in Malaysia and our digital future. It reflects what we can achieve together through strategic investments, innovation, and collaboration,” he said during the launch event. Gobind added that the project is also expected to generate substantial local economic impact, with 99 per cent of the capital expenditure sourced locally. He noted that the initiative will help upskill Malaysian contractors in the development of high-tech infrastructure. Beyond technological advancement, he highlighted the facility’s sustainability features, including an on-site water recycling plant designed to promote efficient resource management and support NEXTDC’s long-term sustainable operations agenda. He said the government remains committed to supporting investments that strengthen Malaysia’s digital ecosystem, drive innovation, and create high-value opportunities for local industries and talent. -- MINUTESMY -- SOURCE: FB GOBIND SINGH DEO
