KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 23 -- Malaysia will continue to leverage various international platforms, including the United Nations (UN), the UN Security Council, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), BRICS and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) towards a comprehensive resolution to the conflict in West Asia. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia was among the first countries to express support for the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States (US) and Iran which was signed last Wednesday, in addition to continuing to monitor the progress of follow-up negotiations to ensure stability in the region can be achieved. The Rembau MP said Malaysia would also continue to provide moral support and play an active role in international efforts to ease tensions that have resulted in a global supply crisis following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. "Alhamdulillah, the US and Iran have finally agreed to sign the MoU, which allocates a period of 60 days for both countries to negotiate to ratify the matters agreed upon in the agreement." "A total of 14 items are contained in the MoU, including efforts to rebuild Iran's destroyed infrastructure (worth USD300 billion), the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and a full withdrawal (of Israel), including in Lebanon," he said when answering a question from Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) during Ministerial Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today. He said Malaysia was also taking an indirect approach, including providing support to countries involved in the conflict, as well as holding discussions with the future President of the UN General Assembly regarding efforts to strengthen the international community's support for resolving the conflict in the region. "I personally contacted my Pakistani counterpart, who is hosting the US and Iran (negotiations), as well as my counterparts from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, to provide moral support and that we will continue to support several steps that will be taken to end the conflict in West Asia immediately," he said. However, he said the Zionist regime appears not to want the peace efforts to succeed and continues to take actions that threaten peace and stability in the region. Therefore, Mohamad wants to continue international pressure on Israel to stop military actions in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and other regions. Responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran), he said that one of the main challenges in putting pressure on Israel was the use of the US veto power at the UN Security Council. "They have used the veto power 31 times since the beginning until now, 31 times it was used to protect their friend the Zionist regime of Israel," he said. -- BERNAMA
