PUTRAJAYA, July 17 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed Malaysia’s stronger-than-expected economic performance after the country’s advance estimate of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) recorded a 5.8 per cent growth in the second quarter of 2026.
In a statement on Friday, Anwar said the latest figure marked an improvement from the 5.4 per cent growth recorded in the first quarter of 2026 and exceeded the median forecast of 5.2 per cent by economists.
The Prime Minister attributed the encouraging performance to the resilience of the Malaysian economy despite continued global challenges, including geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and uncertainties in international trade.
According to Anwar, the reforms and policies implemented by the MADANI Government over the past three years have strengthened the country’s economic fundamentals, enabling Malaysia to better withstand external shocks and navigate an increasingly uncertain global environment.
He said the positive growth reinforces the government’s determination to remain steadfast in its reform agenda while enhancing economic resilience and balancing the need for sustainable growth, fiscal responsibility, and the well-being of the people.
Anwar stressed that the government would continue to pursue policies aimed at ensuring that strong economic growth translates into tangible benefits for Malaysians through the creation of more quality jobs, higher incomes, and improved living standards.
“The MADANI Government will continue working harder to ensure this economic strength benefits all Malaysians by creating better employment opportunities, raising incomes, and improving the quality of life for the people,” he said.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Malaysia’s continued economic momentum would provide a solid foundation for sustainable and inclusive growth while strengthening the nation’s competitiveness in the years ahead.
