KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 20 — The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has decided to hold an inquest proceeding to investigate the deaths of three individuals in a shooting incident in Durian Tunggal, Melaka on Nov 24 last year.
AGC, in a statement today, announced that the inquest proceedings aimed to determine the cause and reason for the death and examine the facts and circumstances leading to the death, including identifying whether or not there were any criminal elements in relation to the deaths of the three individuals.
“This department has received and examined the investigation papers submitted by the Royal Malaysian Police.
“After considering all the evidence and investigation findings, the AGC decided that an inquest proceeding be held under Section 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code [Act 593],” the statement said.
AGC stated that the department views every incident involving loss of life seriously and the decision to hold an inquest reflects the department’s commitment to ensuring that all facts and circumstances are examined thoroughly, transparently and independently.
“This department remains committed to ensuring that every legal action and process is carried out fairly, professionally and based on the principles of the rule of law,” the statement said.
In the incident on Nov 24 last year, three men aged between 24 and 29 were shot dead after one of them allegedly swung a machete at a police corporal at an oil palm plantation in Durian Tunggal, at about 4am.
The incident caused the police officer, who is in his early 30s, to suffer serious injuries to his left arm.
On May 26, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department Director Datuk M. Kumar said the investigation paper for the shooting case was referred back to the AGC after his department completed several additional instructions requested by the prosecution.
