Malaysia Strengthens Cooperation With European ITS Leaders to Drive Smart Mobility

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia strengthen strategic collaboration with Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) leaders in Europe to drive the development of the country’s smart mobility ecosystem in line with the Malaysia ITS Master Plan 2025-2030.

The Ministry of Works (KKR) in a statement announced that the effort was expressed through an engagement session led by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi with major European ITS organizations in conjunction with Intertraffic Amsterdam 2026.

During the meeting, Nanta held discussions with ERTICO–ITS Europe, ITS Germany and Connekt/ITS Netherlands to exchange views on the development of smart transport technology, explore potential collaboration in smart mobility and the development of digital transport infrastructure.

KKR announced that the engagement reflects Malaysia’s commitment to strengthen international cooperation in an effort to strengthen the development of a smarter, data-based and technology-enabled transport ecosystem.

“Malaysia also sees opportunities to leverage the experience of European countries in implementing smart mobility solutions including digital traffic management, mobility data integration and the use of new technologies such as artificial intelligence to improve the efficiency and safety of the transport system.

“Malaysia appreciates the opportunity to learn from Europe’s experience in implementing smart mobility solutions and build strong collaboration between government, industry and research institutions,” the statement said.

KKR informed that the discussions with ERTICO–ITS Europe focused on efforts to strengthen collaboration through research partnerships, knowledge sharing platforms, capacity building initiatives and participation in international ITS programmes.

“ERTICO also introduced the ERTICO Academy which offers specialized training programmes for mobility professionals and has the potential to tailor capacity building programmes to support the development of Malaysian institutions in the field of smart transport systems,” the statement said.

KKR informed that in a separate meeting, ITS Germany shared the country’s experience in developing digital transport infrastructure and smart mobility governance.

“Among the main focuses is the Artificial Intelligence and Mobility (AIAMO) initiative, a research program that integrates artificial intelligence, environmental data and mobility management to improve traffic efficiency, sustainability and multimodal transportation planning.

“The initiative brings together 14 research and industry partners to develop artificial intelligence-based solutions that support more efficient, safe and environmentally responsive mobility systems,” according to the statement.

KKR informed that discussions with Connekt/ITS of the Netherlands also touched on the country’s leadership in sustainable mobility, integrated traffic management and collaborative innovation platforms involving government, industry and research institutions.

Meanwhile, Nanta also invited international partners to join the mobility and road infrastructure platform to be organised in Malaysia in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year (TMM) 2026. 

“Among them are the Malaysian Road Maintenance Convention under the MY ASEAN Roads and Traffic Expo and Conference (MYARTTE) 2026 which is scheduled to take place from Sept 30 to Oct 2 and the Malaysian Roads Conference 2026 from Oct 13 to 15,” according to the statement. 

KKR informed that the engagement session The meeting also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of smart transport technologies, including the use of mobility data, artificial intelligence and digital innovation to support a more efficient, safe and sustainable transport system.

Malaysia is participating in the Intertraffic Amsterdam 2026 forum for the first time and is the only ASEAN country to receive an official invitation to participate in the prestigious event.

The Malaysian delegation to the forum on traffic technology, road infrastructure and smart mobility which took place at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre from March 9 to 12.
