GLASGOW, July 28 2026— Malaysia achieved its target of five gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after para long jump T20 world record holder Datuk Abdul Latif Romly clinched the nation’s fifth gold medal on Tuesday.
Competing in wet and cold conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, Abdul Latif produced a winning leap of 7.17 metres on his third attempt to secure the gold. Malaysia also celebrated a bronze medal in the same event through Eljoe Gotuoh, who registered a best jump of 6.51m.
Earlier, national weightlifter Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin delivered Malaysia’s fourth gold medal in the men’s 88kg category during his Commonwealth Games debut.
The 22-year-old impressed with a combined lift of 345kg, comprising 162kg in the snatch and 183kg in the clean and jerk, setting new Commonwealth Games records in both disciplines.
Malaysia also added two silver medals through its lawn bowls squad. The women’s pairs duo of Aleena Ahmad Nawawi and Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman finished runners-up after losing to England’s Amy Pharaoh and Sian Honnor in the final.
In the men’s singles, Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple created history as the first Malaysian to win a medal in the event before settling for silver following a defeat to England’s Sam Tolchard.
For Syafiqa, who is five months pregnant, the silver medal carried special significance as she dedicated the achievement to her unborn child.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s lawn bowls campaign continued positively as world number one Emma Firyana Saroji and the men’s pairs combination of Amirul Danial Abdul Rahim and Mohammad Soufi Rusli both opened their respective campaigns with victories.
In artistic gymnastics, Muhammad Sharul Aimy Kamaru Hisam narrowly missed the podium after finishing fourth in the men’s vault. He recorded the same score as Cyprus’ Neofytos Kyriakou but lost the bronze medal on a tie-break.
With the latest results, Malaysia sits sixth in the overall medal standings with five gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
Australia continues to dominate the Games with 35 gold, 18 silver and 27 bronze medals, followed by Canada with 13 gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze, while England occupies third place with 10 gold, 18 silver and 15 bronze.
