Adela Ida Jiram Elected MSPTM President, First Sarawakian Iban Woman to Hold Post

KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 — Biomedical scientist Adela Ida Jiram has been elected president of the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (MSPTM), becoming the first Sarawakian and Iban woman to hold the position.

Adela Ida, who serves at the Institute for Medical Research under the National Institutes of Health Malaysia, was elected during the society’s 62nd Annual General Meeting recently.

In a statement, MSPTM said her appointment comes at a time when Malaysia is strengthening its research capabilities, public health preparedness and international scientific presence.

It added that Adela Ida is expected to steer the society’s efforts in professional development, scientific exchange and broader national engagement on issues related to parasitology and tropical medicine.

“For MSPTM, this is not only a historic appointment but also reflects the society’s future direction in making the field more visible, collaborative and relevant to the public,” the statement said.

Adela Ida said her priorities include mentoring young scientists, enhancing collaboration among researchers and institutions, increasing public awareness, and elevating the society’s national profile.

She also aims to expand Malaysia’s role in the global scientific community by supporting more international conferences and platforms to showcase local research, while positioning MSPTM as a key contributor to global discussions in parasitology and tropical medicine.
