Anwar Orders Further Consultations on AG-Public Prosecutor Separation, Says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said to conduct further consultations on proposed constitutional amendments to separate the roles of the Attorney-General and the Public Prosecutor.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the directive followed concerns raised by the Malay Rulers during a Conference of Rulers meeting on the proposed amendments.

He said Azalina had been instructed to engage with the Parliamentary Special Select Committee tasked with preparing the constitutional amendments.

“Any subsequent amendments or improvements must then be presented to the Conference of Rulers,” he said at his weekly press conference today.

Fahmi, who is also the MADANI Government spokesperson, said the Cabinet had been briefed on the outcome of Anwar’s presentation to the Conference of Rulers regarding proposed constitutional amendments on the Prime Minister’s tenure.

He described both proposals as significant institutional reforms that required further refinement before they could proceed.

“These are two significant reform initiatives, and several processes still need to be finalised,” he said.

Separately, Fahmi said the Cabinet had been informed that Parliament now came entirely under the jurisdiction of the Parliamentary Services Council, ending executive control over its administration.

He said the development fulfilled a key government pledge on institutional reform and would strengthen Parliament’s independence.

“This fulfils one of our promises and represents a major institutional reform. We believe it will help democracy continue to flourish in Malaysia,” he said.
