Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — 11 August, 2026 — BlaBlaCar, the world’s leading carpooling platform with 30 million annual active members, announces its launch in Malaysia. This expansion is part of the company’s first presence in Southeast Asia and is part of a greater expansion program that brings BlaBlaCar’s total global footprint to 41 countries. The platform is also available in Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam.
The platform connects private drivers who have available seats on planned intercity journeys with passengers traveling to the same destination, allowing both parties to share the cost of the trip.
An affordable alternative as fuel costs ride
The launch arrives at a moment when fuel prices are placing increasing pressure on household budgets across Malaysia. With 909 vehicles per 1,000 people, nearly three times the broader Asia-Pacific average of 317, Malaysians have a high reliance on private vehicles, making the cost of everyday mobility an important household consideration.
Although eligible Malaysians continue to benefit from RON95 at RM1.99 per litre under the BUDI95 program, unsubsidised RON95 prices have risen by nearly 36% since early March, reaching RM3.62 per litre by late July. Against this backdrop, the Government has encouraged more prudent fuel use and more efficient journey planning to help manage fuel consumption and subsidy expenditure.
For Malaysians who already rely on private vehicles, sharing the cost of journeys can provide a practical way to make existing trips more affordable. The average BlaBlaCar trip carries 2.1 passengers, meaning drivers can offset more than half their fuel and toll costs by sharing expenses. The platform’s pricing tool calculates a fair contribution per passenger based on local fuel rates and route distance — capping fees at cost recovery, not profit.
Between March and July 2026 alone, BlaBlaCar registered more than 1,200,000 new drivers globally, a sign of growing appetite for cost-sharing mobility solutions across the world.

How BlaBlaCar works
Carpooling through BlaBlaCar is a three-step process:
- Drivers post their planned trip — origin, destination, date, available seats and price — on the BlaBlaCar app (free on Apple and Android stores) or website.
- Passengers search for trips matching their route and book a seat directly through the platform.
- Both parties travel together, sharing fuel and toll costs for the journey.
The model offers a flexible and social alternative, particularly for medium-distance intercity routes sometimes underserved by public transport, and reduces the number of single-driver vehicles on the road.
