KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 -- Five of the seven people trapped inside a flooded cave in Laos for about a week are alive, healthy and in good spirits, although rescuers say the extraction operation remains difficult and dangerous. One of the Thailand-based divers involved in the mission, Mikko Paasi, said the five survivors were found in the terminal chamber of the cave after days of intensive search efforts by rescue teams. Posting on Facebook, Paasi said the operation had been “far from easy” and praised all teams involved in the rescue mission. “After a week of hard teamwork, we finally found five of the missing seven miners trapped in a Laotian flooded mine. “For me and @benzscout (Norrased Palasing), we need to dive straight back and bring the miners more supplies to help them regain strength and get ready for the way out,” the Finnish diver wrote. Paasi, one of the rescuers involved in the dramatic 2018 rescue of 12 boys and their football coach from a flooded cave in northern Thailand, added that the extraction operation was still ahead and is not going to be easy. Sharing his relief after the discovery, Paasi wrote: “Those who say it can’t be done, shouldn’t interrupt people doing it. What a feeling!” Attached to the post was a video showing the five survivors being asked their names and about their condition, with most replying that they were fine but hungry. Earlier, the head of the Thai rescue team, Kengkard Bongkawong, said: “As of 4.30 pm (0930 GMT), we found five people. We will continue searching for the other two,” Reuters reported. Meanwhile, another Thai volunteer rescuer, Chakrakrit Taengtung, also posted a video on Facebook showing Norrased and Paasi with the five survivors cheering and raising their arms in the air. HYDERABAD, May 27 -- India has heightened Ebola watch at its airports after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the latest outbreak of the disease in parts of Africa as a public health emergency. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued new standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be adopted at airports, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) said in a post on X on Tuesday. Airports have strengthened health surveillance measures for passengers arriving from or transiting through affected countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda and South Sudan, with mandatory self-declaration and health screening protocols in place, the top airport operator said. India on Sunday issued a travel advisory for its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan. There were more than 900 suspected cases of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the DRC and 220 suspected deaths, WHO director-general Tedros Ghebreyesus said on Monday. -- BERNAMA

GAZA: Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are set to celebrate Eid al-Adha for the third consecutive year amid what officials and residents describe as dire humanitarian conditions. In addition, widespread livestock shortages and soaring prices have also left most families unable to afford sacrificial animals, reported Qatar News Agency (QNA). The region's Ministry of Agriculture has reported that the livestock sector has been devastated by the ongoing war since October 2023, claiming the destruction of farms, veterinary facilities and food storage sites, as well as the killing of a large number of animals. According to the ministry, imports of live animals, food and veterinary medicines have dropped to "zero" due to the continued closure of crossings. Vientiane Times reported that the victims, believed to be illegally mining gold, were trapped in the cave on May 20 after the water level began to rise. "The rescue operation is very challenging as the water level in the cave continues to rise due to continuous rain." "Lao and Thai rescue teams are working non-stop to reach trapped villagers." ISTANBUL: Spain on Monday confirmed a new case of hantavirus among individuals undergoing preventive quarantine at a hospital in Madrid, Anadolu Agency reported. "The positive case was detected during periodic diagnostic checks carried out on contacts under surveillance," the country's Ministry of Health said in a post on social media platform X. It is the second positive case among 14 Spanish nationals evacuated to Tenerife from the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius. The ship was carrying about 150 passengers and crew from 23 countries. On May 11, the Spanish Health Minister announced that a Spanish passenger on the MV Hondius cruise ship had tested positive for hantavirus shortly after authorities completed the ship's evacuation operation. Authorities on Monday said the individual had been under clinical monitoring and isolation since being admitted to hospital, "in accordance with the protocols set by the Early Warning and Rapid Response System." ISTANBUL: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Monday that efforts to ensure Israel's full withdrawal from Lebanese territory remain a national priority, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported, citing state media. "The path towards a full Israeli withdrawal remains a firm national demand, which the Lebanese state is working to achieve through negotiations," Aoun said in a statement carried by the Lebanese government's National News Agency (NNA). The statement was made as Lebanon commemorated Resistance and Liberation Day, commemorating Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000 after 22 years of occupation. ISTANBUL -- Omani and Iranian officials held discussions on the principles governing freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in line with international law, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported , citing the Omani Foreign Ministry on Sunday. The discussions took place during a meeting in Muscat between Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi, who is visiting the sultanate with a diplomatic and legal delegation. According to the ministry's statement, the meeting was held after Gharibabadi delivered a message from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding regional developments and the ongoing Iran-United States (US) negotiations mediated by Pakistan.
