Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will undertake a two-day state visit to Malaysia beginning today at the invitation of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
The Foreign Ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said El-Sisi would be accompanied by Cabinet ministers and senior government officials for his first state visit to Malaysia since assuming office in June 2014.
In a statement, the ministry said Malaysia and Egypt established diplomatic relations in 1959 and have since maintained warm and cordial ties through strong cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
The visit is expected to further strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two countries through the elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership.
During the visit, El-Sisi will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony before having an audience with Sultan Ibrahim at Istana Negara. His Majesty will also host a state banquet in honour of the Egyptian president and his delegation.
Wisma Putra said El-Sisi is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to review progress in bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Both leaders will witness the exchange of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Malaysia and Egypt. The programme will be followed by an official hi-tea hosted by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex.
In terms of economic relations, Egypt was Malaysia’s seventh-largest trading partner in Africa in 2025.
Total bilateral trade amounted to RM3.08 billion (US$720 million) last year, with Malaysian exports to Egypt valued at RM2.55 billion (US$600 million) and imports from Egypt reaching RM530 million (US$120 million).
Trade momentum has continued into 2026, with total trade between the two countries rising by 74.7 per cent to RM3.49 billion (US$870 million) from January to August.
The visit is expected to provide further opportunities for Malaysia and Egypt to deepen diplomatic relations, expand economic cooperation and strengthen collaboration on issues of mutual interest.
