SHAH ALAM — A failure of the ride to move forward before coming to an abrupt stop is believed to have caused an incident involving a roller coaster at Sunway Lagoon theme park in Subang Jaya last Saturday.
The Selangor Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) said preliminary investigations at the scene found that the ride, carrying 22 passengers, had been operating normally before it failed to move approximately 200 metres from the starting point.
The department said the malfunction automatically activated the emergency braking system, causing the ride to stop suddenly.
Following the incident, 10 passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment after sustaining injuries believed to have resulted from the impact.
DOSH said a prohibition order had been issued at the scene to facilitate further investigations and technical inspections by its Forensic Engineering Division in Putrajaya to determine the actual cause of the incident.
Further investigations are also underway, including recording statements from the operator and witnesses.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 18(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.
Sunway Group founder Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah had earlier confirmed that an accident involving a roller coaster ride occurred at Sunway Lagoon on Saturday night.
