KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 ,2026 Five Malaysians have been arrested at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo after Japanese customs officers found five kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in their shoe insoles.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said six Malaysians, aged between 19 and 26, left Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA2) for Japan on Friday. Five were detained, while the sixth individual returned to Malaysia.
The suspects comprise two men and three women, who were arrested on Oct 10. All six individuals have been identified by Malaysian police, with five reportedly from Sarawak. None had a criminal record.
Hussein said the department would send a team to Japan to investigate the case and obtain information on drug syndicates operating locally and internationally.
Japanese authorities are also tracing the origin of the cocaine and investigating the network behind the alleged smuggling operation.
He urged Malaysians to remain vigilant about overseas travel offers, especially those involving carrying luggage or items for other people.
The public was also advised against transporting unknown items to avoid being exploited as drug mules.
