French Union Calls for November 5 General Strike Over Rising Living Costs

PARIS, October 22 2026, France could see further nationwide demonstrations and industrial action on Nov 5 after the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) called for a general strike over rising living costs, stagnant wages and growing financial insecurity.

The union said economic pressures were worsening conditions for many people, particularly young workers facing limited employment prospects.

CGT chief Sophie Binet raised the concerns during a meeting with Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, urging the government to introduce immediate measures to ease the burden on households.

Her proposals included a 10 per cent increase in the minimum wage, a freeze on fuel and essential goods prices, and stronger support for companies facing job cuts.

Binet also called on the government to reconsider planned reductions in social spending under next year’s budget, which is scheduled for parliamentary debate.

She said frustration among young people, employees and pensioners had reached a critical level, stressing the need for decisive action.

Meanwhile, Binet said union members would join demonstrations planned for Saturday, wearing red high-visibility vests to accompany protesters and help maintain safety during the marches.

The latest calls for industrial action follow nationwide protests last Saturday that were marred by violence, including rioting, arson and looting.
