Gobind Urges Swift Action Against Desecration of Religious Symbols

PUTRAJAYA, 12 March 2026: Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has called on enforcement authorities to act swiftly in identifying and prosecuting individuals responsible for the desecration of religious symbols, warning that failure to do so could heighten racial tensions in the country.

Gobind, who is also national chairman of the Democratic Action Party and Member of Parliament for Damansara, said the Royal Malaysia Police have a fundamental duty to maintain peace and public order.

He noted that recent incidents involving the abuse of the Quran were unacceptable, but commended the authorities for taking quick action to charge those responsible.

The swift response sets an important precedent that such behaviour will not be tolerated,” he said in a statement.

However, Gobind stressed that similar decisive action must also be taken against acts involving the Soolam, a sacred symbol of the Hindu community, which has recently sparked public concern.

He urged police to immediately investigate and take appropriate action against those responsible, saying that delays or inaction could lead to increased racial tension.

Failure to act in cases like these leads to heightened racial tension. We must maintain racial harmony and unity by upholding and enforcing the law without fear or favour,” he said.

Gobind added that the issue was raised and discussed during a Cabinet meeting yesterday, noting that the government’s stance on the matter is clear.

He also called on Inspector-General of Police to ensure that those responsible for desecrating religious symbols are quickly identified and brought to court.

Malaysia cannot afford to slide into lawlessness or racial unrest. The police must act now to restore public confidence and safeguard the peace we have built,” he said.
