Government Innovation Initiative to Accelerate Malaysia’s AI Nation Goal by 2030

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 February 2026 – The Ministry of Digital has launched the Government Innovation Initiative (GII), a strategic national effort aimed at transforming digital governance and accelerating Malaysia’s ambition to become an AI Nation by 2030.

The initiative is designed to move beyond conceptual innovation towards measurable outcomes by converting real-world government and citizen problem statements into deployable solutions. It prioritises “Made by Malaysia” technologies, strengthens the domestic artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, and supports Malaysian AI and digital product developers in scaling their solutions locally and globally.

Under the direction of the Ministry of Digital, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has successfully delivered a flagship pilot project under GII known as the RadioConnect initiative. The pilot was implemented across three public hospitals.

RadioConnect is aimed at providing systematic and efficient cloud-based connectivity with secure nationwide access through each hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The initiative facilitates secure, cost-effective and instant electronic storage, retrieval and sharing of diagnostic images such as X-rays, MRIs and CT scans.

Through the system, authorised doctors and medical practitioners can access patient images across multiple departments and hospitals nationwide, enhancing diagnostic efficiency and improving patient care.

The next phase of GII will see the establishment of Citizen Labs, a collaborative platform that enables members of the public to submit problem statements and share their experiences. These inputs will be channelled directly to relevant ministries to ensure appropriate and targeted solutions are developed to address the needs of the rakyat.

Supporting this mission is the MyInovasi portal (myinovasi.gov.my), positioned as Malaysia’s premier platform for cultivating a dynamic innovation ecosystem. The pilot initiative, led by the Ministry of Digital and its agencies, is designed to bridge the government, academia and industry by matching local innovations with real-world demands.

As part of a whole-of-government approach, the Ministry of Digital is aligning key national innovation assets under a unified ecosystem. In line with GII’s objectives, Futurise Sdn Bhd will transition to operate under MDEC, where it will continue advancing GII projects through the National Regulatory Sandbox framework.

Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo said the initiative goes beyond the adoption of new technology.

“The Government Innovation Initiative is not just about adopting new technology but about building a future-proof public sector that is responsive, efficient and deeply rooted in local ingenuity,” he said.

“Through GII, we are breaking down silos and unifying our national innovation assets under a single, cohesive ecosystem. With Citizen Labs, we are creating a direct pipeline where the rakyat’s challenges meet Malaysian-made AI solutions, accelerating our transformation into a leading digital nation by 2030,” he added.
