Greece Sees Nationwide Strikes Over Living Costs, Education Funding

ATHENS, October 21 2026 Workers, trade unions and student groups across Greece held nationwide strikes and protests on Wednesday, calling for measures to ease the rising cost of living and greater funding for public education.

Media reports said about 3,000 police officers were expected to be deployed in Athens to prevent unrest amid concerns over protests seen in other European cities.

The demonstrations followed a student protest on Tuesday, when school and university students pitched tents at Syntagma Square outside the Greek parliament.

Students are demanding lower rental costs, higher housing subsidies, more accommodation facilities and additional teaching staff.

Public sector workers also staged walkouts after the ADEDY trade union confederation called for industrial action in support of the education protests.

The union said the walkouts would allow employees, including parents, to join the demonstrations and show solidarity with students.
