KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief (MAHAR) welcomes the apology submitted by 40 Rohingya non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and describes it as a positive and responsible step, while urging the groups to expand their humanitarian efforts.
According to MAHAR in a statement, humanitarian work should go beyond just providing food and shelter, but should also include aspects of educating refugees about their responsibilities while in Malaysia.
It said the NGOs involved should play a greater role in fostering respect among refugees for the laws, culture, customs and societal values in Malaysia to promote better understanding with the local community.
MAHAR also urged the organization to intensify international advocacy efforts to end the oppression of the Rohingya in Myanmar, as sustainable humanitarian work must address the root causes of the crisis.
Meanwhile, MAHAR President Jismi Johari said that humanitarian work also needs to take into account the safety factors of both parties, namely refugees and the local community that receives them.
He said the concerns raised by some Malaysians regarding local security issues should not be underestimated, especially by those who are directly affected by incidents involving individuals in any community.
At the same time, Jismi stressed that it is unfair to make general assumptions about the entire community based on the actions of a few individuals, given that misconduct exists in every society.
He said that addressing such concerns requires empathy, respect and constructive engagement from all stakeholders.
MAHAR reiterates its commitment to continue humanitarian work based on justice, safety and human dignity, for refugees and Malaysians alike.
