KUALA LUMPUR: An overwhelming majority of the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) has decided to remain within the Barisan Nasional (BN), according to Umno leader Puad Zarkashi.
The Umno Supreme Council member said that based on reliable internal sources, about 95% of MIC’s CWC members who met recently supported the decision to stay in the coalition.
“This is the right decision and one that should be welcomed, as it reflects the wishes of the majority of MIC members at the grassroots level,” he said in a Facebook posting.
Puad noted that MIC’s participation in a BN retreat held in February had already signalled the party’s inclination to remain within the coalition.
He also urged MIC’s top leadership, particularly its president, to remain consistent and respect the majority decision for the sake of the party’s revival and BN’s unity.
“Failure to do so could risk internal divisions within MIC and threaten its future,” he added.
Puad further cautioned against any move to align with Perikatan Nasional (PN), claiming the coalition faced its own internal challenges.
He pointed to what he described as internal tensions involving Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) and Malaysian United Indigenous Party, including issues surrounding the opposition leadership.
Puad stressed that MIC’s stability and future would be better secured within BN rather than in a coalition facing internal strains.
