KUCHING, October 17 2026, Malaysia has recorded 5,278 domestic violence cases, with the number continuing to increase, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
She said the ministry was strengthening its focus on counselling and women’s empowerment to help women understand their rights, build self-confidence and achieve financial independence.
Nancy said financial independence could give women greater confidence to stand up for themselves and make it easier for them to leave abusive situations.
She was speaking to reporters at the EmpowerUS 2026 seminar at the Sarawak State Library today.
Commenting on the recent case in Negeri Sembilan involving a 35-year-old female customs officer who was allegedly murdered by her husband, Nancy said the ministry was preparing assistance for the victim’s family, particularly her children.
She added that the ministry remained committed to supporting families affected by such tragedies.
Official figures showed that 632 domestic violence cases were recorded in both July and August, compared with 601 in June. However, the monthly figures remained below the 766 cases reported in April, the highest monthly total recorded so far in 2026.
Meanwhile, Talian Kasih received 104,784 calls as of October 2026, exceeding the 98,050 calls recorded throughout 2025.
Nancy said the increase suggested greater public awareness of the helpline and the support services available.
She added that Talian Kasih was not limited to abuse-related cases, as children and adults could also contact the service for help with family problems and other difficulties.
