Malaysia, WOAH strengthen cooperation in animal health

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) are committed to strengthening cooperation in the fields of animal health, veterinary services, disease surveillance and emergency preparedness.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Chan Foong Hin made the announcement during a courtesy visit from WOAH Director-General Dr Emmanuelle Soubeyran yesterday.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) in a statement today informed that during the meeting, Chan expressed Malaysia’s appreciation for WOAH’s continued support in strengthening the country’s veterinary capacity, promoting transparent disease reporting and advancing international standards related to animal health.

Also discussed was Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the coordination of the One Health approach across the animal health, public health, wildlife, aquatic animal health and environmental sectors.

“Both parties also exchanged views on the WOAH Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) Pathway which continues to serve as an important instrument in supporting the continuous improvement of the Malaysian Veterinary Services,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Health informed that Chan also shared the latest developments regarding several key national initiatives, including the implementation of the National Bridging Workshop (NBW) Roadmap , the Malaysian Rabies Eradication Strategy as well as efforts to strengthen the country’s preparedness in dealing with cross-border animal diseases and the increasing threat of zoonotic diseases.

According to the Ministry of Animal Health, the courtesy visit demonstrates WOAH’s recognition of Malaysia’s commitment to developing a more integrated, resilient and prepared animal health system to face future challenges.

“It also strengthens Malaysia’s and WOAH’s commitment to enhancing preparedness to face animal health challenges and zoonotic diseases,” the statement said.
