KUALA LUMPUR: The man who went viral for driving a car that crashed into two motorcyclists yesterday, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today to two charges of reckless and dangerous driving.
According to both charges, TS Kugenthiran, 25, is charged with recklessly driving a vehicle that was dangerous to Muhammad Afiq Zayani Azliyuszaini, 24, and Muhammad Hairy Abdul Rahman, 19, on Jalan Sultan Ismail from the city centre towards Tuanku Abdul Rahman here at 4.30am, April 2.
The charge is under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides for a maximum prison sentence of five years and a fine not exceeding RM15,000 as well as disqualification to hold or obtain a driving licence for not less than two years and the probationary driving licence to be revoked, if convicted.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurbatrisyia Mohd Razib offered bail of RM4,000 for each charge with one surety.
Lawyer Ahmad Nadzli Rizal, who represented the accused, applied for minimum bail on the grounds that his client was still single and working part-time in Genting Highlands while awaiting admission to further his studies.
Magistrate Tg Syazwany Yasmyn Tuan Roslan allowed the accused to be bailed at RM3,000 for each charge with one surety and set June 15 for mention of the case.
Previously, police reportedly arrested a man to assist in the investigation into an accident involving a car and two motorcycles, believed to have been caused by failure to obey a red traffic light.
Police investigations found that the two motorcycles were crossing the intersection with a green traffic light, but a car coming from the right is believed to have failed to obey the red traffic light and crashed into the motorcyclist.
The two riders suffered serious injuries and were sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. The 24-year-old victim suffered a broken left leg, while the other suffered a broken arm and left leg.
