MCMC Probes 17 for False Information on Fuel and Electricity Rates

PUTRAJAYA, April 3 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating 17 individuals for allegedly spreading false information on fuel price increases and new electricity tariffs that have circulated widely on social media.

In a statement today, MCMC said statements have so far been recorded from eight individuals, including those linked to five cases involving misleading claims about fuel price hikes.

“Of the five cases, statements from three suspects were recorded earlier, while the remaining two were recorded yesterday (April 2),” it said.

MCMC added that three other cases involve false information on new electricity tariffs. The remaining nine individuals are currently being monitored and will be called in to assist with investigations.

The probe is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC emphasised that it views the misuse of social media platforms to spread false information seriously, warning that such actions can cause unnecessary public concern and anxiety.

It also reiterated that firm action will be taken against those found to have violated the law.
