KUALA LUMPUR: The decision by the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) to remain in the Barisan Nasional (BN) reflects the party’s loyalty, historical roots, and political maturity, said BN Secretary-General Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zamry Abd Kadir.
In a statement, Zamry congratulated MIC’s Central Working Committee (CWC) for making a clear and decisive choice to stay with BN, describing it as a decision that honors the party’s long-standing history and spirit of struggle since the Perikatan era (1955–1973) and later within BN (1974 to present).
He noted that the coalition has endured various challenges over decades—including racial tensions, political pressure, and shifts in the national landscape—because of its foundations of trust, loyalty, and shared responsibility.
Zamry outlined four key reasons why MIC’s decision is significant:
- Stability and Continuity: BN provides a stable and experienced platform amid an increasingly fragmented political landscape, demonstrating inclusive and pragmatic governance.
- Strength in Multiethnic Consensus: BN is a tested model of interethnic cooperation, essential for maintaining social harmony in Malaysia’s diverse society.
- Capacity for Renewal: Despite challenges, BN is undergoing restructuring to strengthen its organisation and adopt approaches more responsive to current public needs.
- Rejection of Divisive Politics: The decision sends a clear signal that principles of unity and solidarity cannot be sacrificed for short-term political gain.
He emphasized that efforts to strengthen BN will continue, and that as long as the spirit of unity is maintained sincerely, any attempts to weaken or divide the coalition can be met with wisdom and internal strength.
“Ultimately, this decision is not just about today, but about ensuring that politics based on unity, moderation, and responsibility remains vital for building a more stable and prosperous Malaysia,” Zamry added.
