JOHOR BAHRU, JULY 6 — As the Johor state election campaign enters its final stretch, several key issues have emerged as the dominant themes in political ceramahs and public statements, with each contesting coalition promoting its own narrative in an effort to win over voters.
The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has consistently highlighted issues such as the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), the interests of the Chinese community, alleged threats posed by Muafakat Nasional, and the revival of discussions surrounding former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the 1MDB scandal.
The People’s Justice Party (PKR), meanwhile, has focused its campaign on anti-corruption messaging, criticism of Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s administration, the principles of equality, the contributions of the MADANI Government, as well as references to Najib and the 1MDB case.
Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has largely directed its campaign towards criticising PAS, raising allegations of dishonesty and questioning the party’s ability to deliver on its political agenda.
In contrast, Barisan Nasional (BN) has adopted a more structured campaign strategy, with its component parties placing strong emphasis on the achievements of the Johor state government under the leadership of Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
BN has highlighted the state administration’s performance, the implementation of various people-centric initiatives, and the coalition’s longstanding contributions to Johor’s development.
Perikatan Nasional (PN), however, which has seen its campaign efforts divided between PAS and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), has yet to present a clearly defined agenda for Johor voters in this election.
Overall, observations from the first several days of campaigning indicate that each coalition has adopted a distinct strategy to appeal to the electorate. While some have focused on national political issues and controversies, others have chosen to spotlight governance, administrative performance, and the state government’s achievements.
These contrasting approaches are expected to shape the remainder of the campaign as political parties continue their efforts to convince voters that they offer the best leadership for Johor in the next term.
