Pakistan Congratulates Iran’s New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei

NEW DELHI — Pakistan congratulates Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, as US and Israeli attacks on Iran continue.

“I congratulate His Holiness Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. I also offer my condolences and prayers on behalf of the people of Pakistan on the martyrdom of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other family members,” Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a post on the X platform on Tuesday.

Shehbaz said he was confident that the new supreme leader would lead Iran towards peace, stability and prosperity in the future.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with several other top Iranian leaders, were reportedly killed in a US-Israeli strike on February 28.

Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, was elected as the new supreme leader by Iran’s Assembly of Experts on Sunday.

Russia, Iraq and Oman were among the countries to congratulate him.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a statement on Monday: “Today, when Iran is resisting armed aggression, your duty in this highest office undoubtedly requires great courage and sacrifice. I am confident that you will continue your father’s work with honor and unite the Iranian people in the face of great challenges.”

Mojtaba Khamenei also has the support of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
