KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed the vital role of ethical journalism in safeguarding democracy and public trust, urging media practitioners to uphold integrity and factual reporting as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform the media landscape yesterday.
Speaking at the Malam Wartawan Malaysia MPI 2026, Anwar said the event was held as a tribute to journalists and media professionals who tirelessly shoulder the responsibility of delivering accurate and beneficial information to the public.
The Prime Minister also congratulated Sinar Harian for winning the prestigious Anugerah Kajai, widely regarded as Malaysia’s highest journalism award, describing the achievement as a testament to excellence in the profession.
In his address, Anwar highlighted the growing challenges posed by AI and the rapid spread of information without borders. He stressed that journalism grounded in facts, integrity and accountability has become more important than ever in an increasingly digital and technology-driven world.
While acknowledging the immense potential of AI to enhance news production and information dissemination, Anwar cautioned against allowing technology to erode the core values of journalism. He said human judgment, ethical responsibility and rigorous fact-checking must remain at the heart of the profession.
“The advancement of technology should empower the delivery of information, but it must never replace humanity, sound judgment and the discipline of verification that define responsible journalism,” he said.
Anwar also underscored the importance of a free and responsible media in shaping informed public opinion, strengthening democratic institutions and fostering a culture of knowledge and healthy public discourse.
He called on journalists to continue serving as voices of truth by defending professional ethics and carrying out their responsibilities with courage and integrity for the benefit of the people and the nation’s future.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s recognition of the media’s indispensable role in nation-building, expressing appreciation to journalists for their dedication in ensuring Malaysians have access to credible and trustworthy information amid an evolving digital era.
