SEREMBAN, July 30 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed his apology to the Indian community, saying leaders should have the courage to acknowledge mistakes and make amends when they unintentionally cause offence.
Addressing the PMX Friendly Gathering with the Indian Community in Seremban on Wednesday night, Anwar said his use of an inaccurate term during a recent forum at the University of Malaya was unintentional and that he immediately apologised after realising it had upset some members of the community.
He said accepting responsibility for one’s words is a sign of integrity rather than weakness, adding that no leader is immune from making mistakes.
“I made an error in my choice of words. I never intended to offend anyone, and I sincerely apologise because I believe leaders must admit their mistakes,” he said.
Anwar also rejected attempts to exploit racial sentiments for political gain, stressing that Malaysia belongs equally to every citizen regardless of ethnicity or religion.
He said the country’s diversity should be embraced instead of used to divide society, adding that Malaysians must reject narratives questioning the loyalty or place of any community.
“As a Muslim and a Malay, I was taught to respect others, not to insult or deny anyone’s rights. Every Malaysian who contributes to this country deserves equal respect,” he said.
The Prime Minister called on Malaysians to continue strengthening unity, mutual understanding and harmony, saying these values remain essential to the nation’s progress.
The gathering was attended by Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, as well as representatives of non-governmental organisations and members of the local Indian community.
