Politicians should be careful with their words, don’t misuse freedom of speech – Agong

KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 1 — The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim today ordered all political leaders to always maintain good manners and speech and to be careful in issuing any statements.

Sultan Ibrahim said politicians should not provoke any provocations on sensitive issues, especially ahead of the election season which is a platform for highlighting themselves to win the hearts of the people.

“Avoid provocations and disputes about sensitive issues related to the king, race and religion, as it can anger the people.”

“Don’t let a drop of indigo spoil the whole milk,” said His Majesty at the Ceremony of Presentation and Conferring of the 2026 Federal Orders, Stars and Medals in conjunction with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Official Birthday at Istana Negara, today.

Also departing was the Queen Mother, Raja Zarith Sofiah.

Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and members of the Cabinet including Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil as well as foreign delegates.

In addition, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong said freedom of expression on social media should not be a platform for sowing slander and hatred among the people.

Sultan Ibrahim said the situation became more complicated when artificial intelligence (AI) technology was misused to produce fake news with artificial voices and images through ‘deepfake’ videos on social media.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong also expressed his sadness when His Majesty’s own photo was used in videos and fake content to mislead the public.

Therefore, Sultan Ibrahim ordered the authorities to continue to increase monitoring and take action to curb the matter.

Meanwhile, His Majesty expressed his congratulations to all recipients of Federal Orders, Stars and Medals this year.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong reminded the recipients that the award is not for boasting, but should be used as an encouragement to continue to sincerely serve their religion, race and country.

“I would also like to express my deepest appreciation to all parties involved in organising today’s celebration event.

“My wife and I would like to express our gratitude for the words of appreciation and prayers from all the people who have accompanied me every step of the way in carrying out my duties and responsibilities as head of state.”

“Let us pray, may our country Malaysia always be blessed with blessings, peace, and prosperity, and may its people continue to live in harmony, peace, and unity,” said His Majesty.

The conferment ceremony was the third time Sultan Ibrahim had performed it since His Majesty was installed as Yang di-Pertuan Agong on July 20, 2024.

In total, 161 individuals received Federal Orders, Stars and Medals in conjunction with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Official Birthday this year.
