Rising Fuel Costs Put Pressure on Major US Airlines’ Profits

NEW YORK, October 23 2026, Major US airlines are facing growing financial pressure as rising fuel costs eat into profits despite strong travel demand and record revenues.

American Airlines reported a net loss of US$269 million in the third quarter, even as revenue reached a record US$16.3 billion. Its fuel expenses increased by 67.5 per cent, or US$1.9 billion, compared with the same period last year.

Southwest Airlines posted a net profit of US$270 million, with revenue rising 21.2 per cent to US$8.4 billion. However, higher fuel expenses continued to weigh on its financial performance.

United Airlines recorded US$17.9 billion in revenue, up 17.4 per cent year-on-year, and a net profit of US$1 billion. Its fuel expenses climbed by US$1.8 billion, representing a 62 per cent increase.

All three airlines expect fuel costs to remain elevated in the fourth quarter of 2026, potentially putting further pressure on earnings. American Airlines has also lowered its full-year financial outlook.
