Karuizawa – In response to a growing desire for travel that transcends traditional luxury, Shishi-Iwa House, the acclaimed collection of architectural retreats, unveils its latest bespoke program: “Wine Tour – The Best of Japan.”
Running from May 31 to June 4, 2026, this meticulously curated journey blends cultural depth, natural immersion, and personalized luxury, offering a transformative experience for those seeking a deeper connection to the heart of Japanese craftsmanship.
Paying homage to the storied wine legacies of Nagano and Yamanashi, the programme invites discerning travelers to explore high-elevation vineyards and historic estates while connecting with innovative producers on a journey that honors the region’s unique terrain and the refined precision of Japanese craft.
Guided by the expert team of Shishi-Iwa House and its iconic restaurant, Shola, guests will visit 11 select wineries with exclusive tastings and private tours. The journey commences in Nagano, one of Japan’s most esteemed and innovative wine regions, celebrated for its high-elevation vineyards, volcanic soils, and cool climate that produce wines of exceptional freshness and tension.
The itinerary then extends south to Yamanashi, specifically the district of Katsunuma, the historic birthplace of Japanese viticulture dating back to the late 19th century. Throughout the journey, guests will gain rare insights into sustainable practices that echo the restraint, precision, and harmony of Japanese fermentation traditions.

Highlights include:
- 98WINEs (Yamanashi) – ranked 20th in the World’s 50 Best Vineyards 2025 and named “The Best Vineyard in Asia,” this boutique producer crafts natural wines through gravity fermentation and meticulous techniques.
- Chateau Mercian Mariko Winery (Nagano) – ranked 46th in the World’s 50 Best Vineyards 2025 and renowned for its high-altitude viticulture and award-winning Chardonnay and Merlot.
- Tomi no Oka Winery (Yamanashi) – a legendary estate operated by Suntory, with a heritage dating back to 1909. Guests will enjoy a vineyard tour and a “soil-to-bottle” tasting of more than 20 varieties.
- Maruki Winery (Yamanashi) – Japan’s oldest surviving estate, established in 1891. The winery remains dedicated to refined cultivation techniques that unlock the full potential of its grapes.
- Shichiken Sake Brewery (Yamanashi) – founded in 1750, this historic brewery produces smooth sake made with pristine water of the Southern Alps. The visit includes a private tasting lunch pairing seasonal gastronomy with signature sakes.
“Wine Tour – The Best of Japan” is priced at JPY 520,000 per person for double occupancy. This all-inclusive package includes accommodations for 4 nights/5 days, guided winery visits and tastings, three meals per day, cultural and wellness activities, nature excursions, and round-trip transfers from Karuizawa Station.
